Dear Friends,

Alonzo King LINES Ballet's 30th Anniversary Spring Season boasts a dream collaboration between visionary choreographer Alonzo King and venerated double bassist and composer Edgar Meyer. Hailed by The New Yorker as "...the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively unchronicled history of his instrument," Meyer draws audiences from all music corners - including classical, bluegrass, newgrass and jazz, and was a 2013 Grammy Award recipient for Best Folk Album along with YoYo Ma.

Meyer and his musicians will perform live for every performance. So if you miss him at his sold-out SF Jazz performance this weekend, now is your chance to see him in person.

Alonzo King also welcomes Academy Award winner Jim Doyle, one of the world's leading creators of water feature designs. Doyle, along with lighting designer Axel Morgenthaler, will create a cascading wall of illuminated water to accompany King's work.

Capping off the anniversary program and 30 years of remarkable collaborations, LINES Ballet will perform a trilogy of excerpts from three decades of dance including the highly praised 1994 piece Ocean with recorded music by Pharoah Sanders and a commissioned score by El Hamideen.

Tickets are on sale now - and selling fast! To purchase: call, click, or run on down to the YBCA box office. Get your tickets now and be a part of an unforgettable 30th Anniversary Season.

Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Edgar Meyer's world premiere collaboration is made possible in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Bernard Osher Foundation, and the Lisa and John Pritzker Family Fund.

In Marin with the BFA Program
Photo by BFA sophomore Mary Goetz.
On Valentine's Day, the BFA students paraded through downtown San Rafael as part of the global One Billion Rising movement to end violence against women and girls. Our junior class led Dominican University students and faculty in an energetic flash mob, a glimpse of which can be watched here.

Our senior project performances are fast approaching! Last September our sixteen seniors were each tasked with choreographing an original work on their peers. They have been rehearsing for the past few months and have created quite a diverse collection of pieces. Join us for the premiere of the first round of senior projects on March 22 and 23 at Dominican University. The second round will be presented April 5 and 6. Please visit our website for details.

Please join us in celebrating the Class of 2013 on Saturday, April 27, 2pm, at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, for their annual Senior Showcase. Tickets are available at ybca.org. $25 General Admission. $15 for students and individuals with Dominican ID (available through YBCA Box Office only).

Summer Program Audition Tour Comes to a Close

By RAPT Productions.

The Summer Program audition tour closed February with its largest audition ever in San Francisco, with 93 students in attendance. With February's auditions behind us, just one opportunity remains for those who are still looking to audition - on Saturday, March 16, in Philadelphia. This audition takes place at 5:30pm at Philadelphia Dance Theatre.

We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all of the students who attended an audition on the road or sent a video audition for us to consider. We have witnessed an overwhelming amount of talent over the past two months, and look forward to the summer! As a reminder, audition results are sent within two weeks of the audition date; those who have not heard within three weeks should contact Program Administrator Emily Waenink. Accepted students can visit our Accepted Student Information page for up-to-date instructions and information about their summer at LINES Ballet.

Discovery Project in Atlanta
DP 1

The Discovery Project made a successful stop in Atlanta, GA, where we met about 90 young dancers over the course of the four-day workshop. We congratulate Matt Villanueva, age 15, on being awarded the full scholarship to attend Session One of the Summer Program! We look forward to working with him this summer.

March will be a busy month for the Discovery Project, as we host workshops in two new cities! Summer Program Director Tammy Cheney and faculty members Prince Credell and Carmen Rozestraten will be in Tucson, AZ from March 7-10, sharing LINES Ballet training philosophy at our host site Dancing in the Streets. The following week, faculty members Kara Davis, Arturo Fernandez, and Carmen Rozestraten will bring this workshop to Philadelphia, PA from March 14-17, hosted by Philadelphia Dance Theatre. Please visit our Current Discovery Projects page for more information!
