Hi-ARTS, El Barrio's newest art space, curates tonight's Speak Up! Drawing from its community of artists, Hi-ARTS asks - What does it mean to belong to a community or multiple communities? How does one belong or (dis)-belong? Experience humor, hubris, and hardship from storytellers including Lemon Andersen Kelly Tsai, JLove Calderón, the cast of East WillyB, and Youth Poets from Urban World. There will be a brief talk-back with the artists following their presentations.

About SPEAK UP!
Every second Wednesday, March to May, 6:30pm - 8:30pm. A night of powerfully soulful words, Speak Up! features a dynamic line-up curated and hosted by guest poets.

Very Be Careful

Rousing fans to boogie and shake to the sounds of a Colombian coastal beat, Very Be Careful is alive with rhythms and pulsating grooves that pull dancers to their feet and splash smiles across listeners' faces. With a Caribbean soul and a California heart, this ultimate good-times bar band embraces its Latin roots with a devotion to Colombian vallenato folk music, mixed with a contemporary funk feel. Very Be Careful is part of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concerts Series.


Tickets are available at El Museo del Barrio on the day of the concert, on a first-come basis, beginning at 12:00pm. No advance RSVP required.

OUT OF SIGHT / ON THE FLOOR: Unseen Visions in Documentary Film

In conjunction with our current exhibition, superreal, El Museo presents a night of conversation and film clips that explore the real in documentaries. Filmmakers Chistina IbarraFrances Negrón-Muntaner, and Ela Troyano reveal the stories behind favorite unseen excerpts from their documentary films. The evening will be a dialogue about the creative, technical, legal, and structural elements that shape the representation of reality. This program is curated and moderated by Andrew Demirjian.

Jóvenes, apply for El Museo's Youth Council where you can explore your interest in art, meet new people, and make connections! During the spring 2013 season Youth Council Members will be joined by celebrated photographer and teaching artist, Sol Aramendi, and explore the theme "out of place." Throughout the 9-week program, YC Members will gain basic digital photography skills, explore what happens behind the scenes at El Museo, and create a program for their peers.

El Museo's Youth Council is open to all NYC youth between the ages of 16-24.

superreal: alternative realities in photography and video

This exhibition explores the layered meanings and interpretations of the real as represented through photography and video. superreal features works by work by artists including ADÁL, Miguel Rio Branco, Tania Bruguera, Ana de la Cueva, Betsabee Romero, Vik Muniz, Andres Serrano, Edin Vélez, and many more.

Presencia
, the most recent exhibition of work from El Museo's permanent collection, focuses on ideas of presence and its antithesis, absence. This theme is explored through photography, painting, prints, drawings, masks, and other objects. The exhibition investigates the visibility and invisibility of the human form through the presentation of the body in literal and conceptual ways. Featured artists include Luis Mendez, Shaun El C. Leonardo, Oscar Muñoz, Benvenuto Chavajay, Christian Cravo, Roberto Juárez, Fernando Salicrup, and Rafael Tufiño.  Presencia will complement the current exhibition superreal.

Presencia opens in conjunction with Voces y Visiones: Highlights from the Collection of El Museo del Barrio, on view at the Nevada Museum of Art, March 2 - July 7, 2013.
