WAYNE HORVITZ & THE ROYAL ROOM COLLECTIVE MUSIC ENSMBLE HIJACK THE STONE

May 21 - 26, 2013

The Stone (NYC)
Avenue C & 2nd
$15

Information: www.theroyalroomseattle.com / www.waynehorvitz.net

In December 2011, music maverick Wayne Horvitz opened the Royal Room - a new project room in Seattle's up and coming Columbia City neighborhood. Built with intention to act as a hub of intersection for the Seattle creative community, and a destination for international artists traveling through the city, the Royal Room has quickly become the Northwest's most diverse and high caliber, casual music environment.

Along with the club, Horvitz also started a house band - the Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble - comprised of some of the city's absolute finest and most creative players. The Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble performs Horvitz's compositions, combining “Conduction” and spontaneous arrangement & orchestration, created by Horvitz in real time.

This month, Horvitz brings his Collective Music Ensemble to a week-long residency at the Stone - John Zorn's renowned creative music gallery in the East Village. With decades of collaborative history, and immense work to support artists and makers in their respective communities, it seems fitting that these two spaces finally intersect.

May 21-26 Wayne Horvitz and the Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble will hijack the Stone - and fill it with cross-country energy and collaborative power, hinged by the lusciousness of Horvitz's hard-hitting large ensemble works.

In conjunction with their residency, the ensemble is releasing a limited edition live recording, created at the Royal Room*. The band will make a studio recording winter 2014.

*live recording will be available to the press by May 7

MORE ABOUT THE ROYAL ROOM

In 2009 musician and composer Wayne Horvitz approached longtime Seattle bar, restaurant and venue owners Tia Matthies and Steve Freeborn about partnering on a new project in Seattle. After two years of planning and development the Royal Room opened in historic Columbia City in December 2011.

With permanent backline, recording and video, a grand piano and a generous stage, the venue has been designed to serve the musicians and artists who will be performing. The restaurant and bar has a comfortable neighborhood feel that welcomes patrons of all ages and varied tastes, from an after work happy hour to late in the evening. Thursday through Monday evenings feature local artists with no cover charge, allowing fans and regulars alike to enjoy the music. Tuesday and Wednesday nights are reserved for national and touring acts.

The music featured at the Royal Room covers a wide range of styles, with an emphasis on creative programming and development. This allows artists to work on projects in a collaborative community space. To that end, the club has been designed to accommodate in house recordings, off hour rehearsals and residencies of four to twelve weeks.
