Enrique Martinez Celaya La Torre de Niege, 2012 Bronze The Tower of Snow has arrived! After a long winter, the weather finally allowed us to receive and install Enrique Martinez Celaya's La Torre de Nieve in our sculpture garden. This monumental bronze of a young boy on crutches carrying a house on his shoulders is by this Cuban born, Miami based artist. While the piece is about his own experience of exile, it also relates to Operation Peter Pan when more than 14,000 Cuban children were brought to the US. Yoan Capote American Appeal (Bridge) 2009 Oil, fish hooks, nails on canvas over plywood c. 78 x 118 inches Upon entering the building, the first work of art to greet you is American Appeal (Bridge) by Cuban artist Yoan Capote. From a distance you see the Brooklyn Bridge with the city skyline behind, and as you approach, the artist's technique of embedding thousands of fish hooks into the rich, thick oil painting becomes apparent. Capote is a brilliant young conceptual artist who, here, plays with ideas of desire, an alluring American landmark, as perhaps seen from a postcard, combined with the risk of migration symbolized by the rusty old fish hooks. The poetic take on issues of longing, migration, isolation are not uncommon in Cuban art, yet remarkably, beautifully and thoughtfully considered here.   We look forward to opening our doors to the public at our Grand Opening on Saturday, September 7, with regular public hours following. Until then, we are planning a number of Member preview events starting with Saturday, May 18. There are still a number of details in the building and with the exhibitions that need to be fine tuned before we can open. Cuban Forever features the diverse, rich, beautiful and compelling contemporary art of the Cuban art community. The Inaugural Exhibiton: Looking Back and Looking Forward explores the collecting interests of Ron Pizzuti with a look back at 20th Century masters that originally captivated him and a look forward to some of the emerging artists being collected today. The Pizzuti Collection presents temporary exhibitions of contemporary art from the collection of Ron and Ann Pizzuti, along with a number of programs and events including lectures, artist talks and educational projects.
