ARCHITECT LED DESIGN BUILD AND NEW YORK CITY

APRIL 2013 – NEW YORK – GLUCK+ (formerly Peter Gluck and Partners Architects and Locus Construction) is pleased to announce the launch of a new series, Changing Architecture, at a dedicated panel event with Metropolis Magazine moderating a discussion with openhousenewyork, Janus Partners, and Pentagram, beginning Monday, April 22, 2013 at 6 PM at The Malt House, located adjacent to the Mink Building in the Manhattanville Factory District at 461 West 126th Street, just east of Amsterdam Avenue.

How can architects reengage in the production and development of the physical city? Architect Led Design Build (ALDB) counters the preoccupation of our culture to silo responsibilities and to avoid risk. Join us to debate, rally and change the practice. This kickoff panel is comprised of speakers concerned about the current and future development of the built environment in New York City. Corresponding to this new panel, a series of videos describing Architect Led Design Build will be projected throughout the Malt House venue, one of the buildings GLUCK+ is designing in the almost three-acre, half-city block district master-planned by GLUCK+. Pentagram will also discuss its role in articulating the GLUCK+ position through the newly redesigned and launched www.gluckplus.com

“Intuitively, we all know that the time of the silos is over and done with.  In practice, the story is quite different. The resistance to change is entrenched in the architecture profession. I’m glad to be part of a discussion among practitioners who have been creating change for years, and I’m looking forward to a lively, game-changing discourse,” notes Susan S. Szenasy, Editor in Chief, Metropolis Magazine.

Gregory Wessner, Executive Director of openhousenewyork adds, “The building boom of the last decade left us with a remarkable legacy of some of the highest quality architecture New York City has built in generations, but it also radically transformed neighborhoods in ways that we may not fully understand for years to come. As development continues to expand to Upper Manhattan, it is important that architects and planners look to the lessons learned over the past ten years to shape change in ways that allow for growth without undermining the qualities that make New York’s neighborhoods so special.”

Scott Metzner, founder and principal of Janus Partners, who has been building in the Harlem community for the last 25 years, says of his firm’s re-development of the Manhattanville Factory District, “We are working with GLUCK+ to bring a modern and intelligent sensibility to an extraordinary neighborhood that, over the last century, had become a de-populated, largely-vacant group of obsolete buildings and vacant lots. It’s about thoughtfully respecting existing historic fabric, while confidently inserting modern architecture in order to revitalize this neighborhood and create new economic opportunities and growth for the next 100 years.”

Peter L. Gluck, founder and principal at GLUCK+ said, “Development is proceeding throughout the city at an extraordinary pace. The architectural community might think of shifting focus from downtown to uptown.”
