Source

Studio Time: Pondering "productive procrastination" with Nerf/Kentridge /Soyinka/Sellars

CORRIGALL: One Sunday, during the popular Arts On Main market at Maboneng, some visitors wandered into Goethe-on-Main looking for food. This wasn’t altogether surprising. With a large cardboard handwritten sign hanging at the entrance boasting the show’s title, Things are Odd, it appeared like a makeshift shop – an extension of the market. In a way, Christian Nerf was delighted that this misinterpretation occurred; he revels in rewriting Source

Countdown to Grahamstown ‘13

By Helen Herimbi. On the eve of the festival’s 40th anniversary,” smiles National Arts Festival director Ismail Mahomed, “we’re doing all the things that someone who was about to turn 40 would do.“So we’re trimming the waistline a little bit because of the broader arts funding issues across the country. We’re running slower and we’re keeping a lover that’s 30 years old. As you know, the Standard Bank Awards are 30 years old next year.” Source

Art project using a human cadaver could still happen Despite failing to legally secure a human body for exhibition, Baldessari would be happy to see his 1970 concept realised one day

By Elizabeth Fortescue.A concept by the artist John Baldessari to display a human cadaver as a work of art could one day be realised, a leading curator believes, despite a recent failed effort to find and display a dead body within the strict legal framework surrounding death and physical remains.Originally conceived by Baldessari in Source

Patronage in L.A. (Part 1 of 3): How Capricious Donors Stymie a Great Art Scene

by Yasmine Mohseni. In recent years, Los Angeles has received increased international attention as an important new center for contemporary art. In fact, the idea that L.A. art is the next great frontier has been repeated so many times that today it’s almost a cliché. The real question should be, in the face of all this buzz, what still holds it back? Source

Qatar reportedly buys Picasso’s Child with a Dove
The oil rich Gulf state has snapped up the UK’s most famous work by Modern master, according to French news

By Gareth Harris. Qatar reportedly buys Picasso’s Child with a Dove. The small, oil-rich Gulf state of Qatar has made another major modern art purchase. According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, the Middle Eastern state has acquired Picasso’s Child with a Dove for £50m, a work that until last year had been in a UK collection since 1924. A spokeswoman for the Qatar Museums Authority says she cannot “confirm nor deny [the acquisition]; QMA does not comment on acquisitions”. Source

5 No-Nonsense Tips for Reading About the Art Market
ART INFO: A lot of what gets written about the art market is crap. It isn't necessarily meant to be so, but the whole thing is set up so that it's all but inevitable that it turns out that way. In the notoriously secretive art trade, the person who has the right information at the right time, and is willing to use it, usually goes home the richest (hi, Larry). Consequently, it's in the interest of everybody to tell everyone else that "everything is going great" and nothing more. Thus, almost every dealer who can afford it employ public relations firms. The big auction houses both have full teams of in-house PR. Source

The Hour That Will Change Your Life: Six Things Artists Should Do for 10 Minutes a Day
HUFFINGTON POST: Hilary Harkness: Every artist struggles with productivity -- how can you create more work, and how do you know where you should be spending your time? I recently spoke with Dorie Clark, strategy consultant and author of the new Harvard Business Review Press book Reinventing You: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your Future, who writes about how professionals can take control of their brand -- and their time. Here's a transcript of our conversation.HH: The average artist is working alone every day, on long-term projects that are often amorphous. I Source
