A Dawn Chorus Concert, a Silent Disco, Sonic Walks, Art, Dance and Photography alongside poetry from Paul Muldoon at Live at LICA’s Curate the Campus

 

 

Live at LICA are busy preparing for their third Curate the Campus Fortnight which runs from 29^th April – 10^th May 2013. 

Curate the Campus is an annual residency programme that develops artistic projects in unusual spaces and locations across the Lancaster University campus and the wider region. This year the fortnight takes inspiration from the start of the University’s “Quiet Period” – a time for reflection, study and revision, working towards the summer exams. In response, Live at LICA have invited artists whose work explores silence, stillness, intimacy and memory and visitors will encounter engaging and unexpected arts projects developing and evolving across the site over the two week period.

 

Throughout, the Peter Scott Gallery will act as a base for the artists involved. Inquisitive visitors, Lancaster residents, staff and students are invited to drop by – to see new exhibitions taking shape day by day, to meet the artists involved, watch a performance, participate or just have a chat and enjoy some excellent coffee and cake. The programme includes a guided sound-tour, a silent mobile disco, a pop-up art exhibition, a dawn chorus concert and a durational dance captured by pin-hole cameras.

 

Fevered Sleep - Stilled is a delicate dance performance for both human audiences and a bank of silent, all-seeing pinhole cameras. The resulting photographs will form exhibitions in new locations on campus during and after the performance. It takes place on May 2^nd & 3^rdand admission is free.

 

Bafta-winning Chris Watson, will be taking time out from recording for BBC Radio 4 to map the sounds of woodland to create his dawn chorus concert specially for Curate the Campus. He is one of the world's leading recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena has worked with David Attenborough for his award-winning series of programmes including The Life of Birds, The Blue Planet, Life in Cold Bloodand The Frozen Planet.  Chris will be presenting his free Live Dawn Chorus Concert on May 3rd at 4am followed by a free breakfast in advance of International Dawn Chorus Day http://www.idcd.info/ on 5th May. He'll then be giving a free talk and recorded performance, 12 hours later at the less adventurous time of 4pm. The performance can also be heard on May 4th between 11am-5pm

 

A very special poetry event takes place on the evening of May 8^th.  Paul Muldoon, described by The Times Literary Supplement as “the most significant English-language poet born since the second World War” will be doing readings and talking about his work in conversation with the poet Paul Farley.

 

Other participating artists involved in this fortnight of activity include William Titley, Mel Brimfield, Jen Southern, and asmith who will be curating exhibitions in the gallery and creating new ideas across campus. Local arts organisations, More Music and Ludus Dance will be encouraging participants in some unusual walks to engage with sound, movement and dance. 

On May 9th at 11am, all the participating artists will be convening in the gallery cafe to talk about their work and outcomes from Curate the Campus, followed by a special talk given by Tim Etchells of Forced Entertainment in the afternoon, everyone is welcome to come along.
