A debut exhibition, organized by The American Turkish Society, will present a cross section of Turkish industrial design during New York’s official design week.
Featured products for Design:Istanbul-NY were hand-picked by an international panel of five distinguished design professionals and industry leaders. Jury members include Gaye Cevikel, founder of luxury design brand Gaia & Gino; Ferda Kolatan, co-founder of su11 architecture+design in New York; Defne Koz, founder of Defne Koz Studio, and co-founder of Koz-Susani Design; Ayşe Birsel Seck, co-founder and creative director of Birsel + Seck; and Ali Tayar, founder of Parallel Design Partnership. They decided on the final selections (comprised of furniture, tabletop items, housewares, lighting and carpets)

"Pleat Box," a ceramic light made to recall the silhouttee of textiles, by Hande Akçaylı and Murat Koçyiğit of Mashallah.

"Extra Wine set," complete with bottle and drinking glass, by Ali Bakova.

"Attractive," a mirror and magnet combination that promotes the convenience of grabbing-and-going, by Umut Demirel.

"Relax," porcelain tableware that creates different patterns when stacked, by Tamer Nakisci.

"Tulûat," a wool rug created through a process which the designer starts and the weaver completes without referring to any preset scheme, by Koray Ozgen.

"Novela Vessels," a family of ceramic tabletop products, by Erin Türkoğlu and Melodi Bozkurt of Müzz Design.

"Tearend Teacup and Saucer," a contemporary interpretation to the Turkish tea set, by Can Yalman.

Gaye Cevikel, founder of luxury design brand Gaia & Gino will lead a rich and interactive conversation on "Design Entrepreneurship,” about the challenges and rewards of being an entrepreneur. Arguably Turkey’s first female design entrepreneur, Gaye is known for combining the ornately traditional and contemporary design. Cocktails to follow at the Design:Istanbul-NY booth for attendees only, compliments of The Guinea Pig Group.

Live Performance Art Blending Food & Mixology

Renowned food artist of Istanbul, Dilara Erbay and designer mixologists from the Brooklyn-based event planning company The Guinea Pig Group, will present a collaborative live performance where Turkey’s unique culinary secrets will be paired with the artisanal cocktails of Brooklyn. While Dilara Erbay reveals her “traditional and experimental” creations of food with exotic and natural ingredients, The Guinea Pig Group mixologists will be spontaneously blending cocktails in their shakers inspired by the demonstration as it progresses. Take part in this experimental affair of creativity that combines unique samples of food and drinks.
As you mark your calendars for the weekend, also make plans to see Dilara’s unique food installation, Wishing Tree, at the Design: Istanbul-New York booth.
On May 18 & May 19, Turkish bagels will be served at the booth at 10:15am, courtesy of Simit and Smith.
