(New York, April 23, 2013) — The anticipation for PULSE New York 2013 grows as galleries from Los Angeles to Albuquerque, London to Chihuahua and, New York to the Hamptons prepare their booths for the opening of the fair on Thursday, May 9th at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea.

“PULSE New York is embarking on several new initiatives this year, including a wide-ranging social media competition, “What’s Your PULSE?”, and a partnership with the highly-successful—and New York magazine favorite—Hester Street Fair to provide pop-up food vendors; in addition to a diverse range of PULSE Projects, including more artist performances than in prior editions. It is important for the fair to keep evolving in order to continue reaching a greater international audience. We want to provide experiences that define the creativity and vitality of PULSE,” comments Cornell DeWitt, Director.

PULSE PROJECTS
PULSE Art Fair’s signature PULSE Projects program is committed to the presentation and promotion of audience-engaging, large-scale sculptures, installations and performances.  A highlight of PULSE New York 2013 will be the presence of three ongoing performances throughout the venue.  At COAGULA CURATORIAL, Tim Youd will “perform” the re-typing of Henry Miller's legendary Tropic of Capricorn on one page of paper, using the same brand of typewriter as Miller, a classic Underwood manufactured in the early 1930s. A special project from Creative CapitalSpring Flings & Pretty Things—will feature Franco Mondini-Ruiz in the irreverent role of a gallerist showing his kinetic, multidisciplinary art incorporating painting, sculpture, and installation.  After their wildly popular performance last year, performance artists, Liza Lozano and Tora Lopez return with We Couldn’t Remember What We Came To Forget. Through a combination of specific lighting, palm trees, LCD screens, and sounds of the ocean, Lozano and Lopez will create a vacation “destination” on the second floor of the fair. Vistors can interact with the artists as they spend their “vacation” lounging, taking photos and videos, and relaxing in an, otherwise, frenetic environment. Other PULSE Projects include Russell Maltz’s PAINTED /STACK, day glo enamel on concrete blocks dispersed throughout the fair, courtesy Galerie Michael Sturm; in addition to hanging neon comets, Comet: Nature and Comet: Grace by Tristin Lowe, and futuristic-like sculptures created from packaging materials for computers, stereos, and televisions by Jason Rogenes, both courtesy of The West Collection.

PULSE PLAY
The New York 2013 edition of PULSE PLAY, the fair’s curated video and technology series, features Janica Rusica’s three monitor installation, Screen Test (For A Living Sculpture) (courtesy of OTTO ZOO); The Labyrinth Runner by Robbie Corneliseen, which follows the rhythmic breathing of a runner (courtesy of Art Mûr); and Lars Arrhenius, who uses pictographs to create imagery in The Street, (courtesy of The West Collection).

PULSE EXHIBITORS
In addition to the line-up of international exhibitors, PULSE’s US-based exhibitors will also highlight PULSE’s support of original programming and its platform for blending emerging and established artists in innovative exhibitions.  Pablo’s Birthday (New York) will feature four contemporary German artists, including Thorsten Brinkmann, who is currently having a solo show at Kunsthalle Bremerhaven in Germany and a new painting by widely celebrated painter and sculptor, Eckart Hahn. Coming off his successful New York Times reviewed exhibition, Thanks, Adam Parker Smith returns to PULSE with new work at Davidson Contemporary (New York); Eric Firestone Gallery (East Hampton) will present Tseng Kown Chi’s revealing portraits of Jean-Michel Basquiat; Peter Hutchinson’s photo collages and mixed-media constructions from his recent 50 year retrospective, The Logic of Mountains will be at Freight + Volume (New York); Richard Levy (Albuquerque) will highlight new William Betts paintings; Stephen Romano (Brooklyn) will feature drawings by one of the earliest documented, self taught artists in the U.S., Charles A.A. Dellschau; Canadian painter Kim Dorland will exhibit new works at Mike Weiss (New York);  Pan American Art Projects (Miami) will present Abel Barroso’s work, which combines printmaking and sculpture referencing Cuban life; Waterhouse & Dodd (London / New York) will feature Karen Gunderson’s black paintings conjuring vast landscapes; self-portraits by San Franciso based photographer, Danielle Nelson Mourning will be in the IMPULSE section at Taylor de Cordoba (Culver City); also in IMPULSE, Denny Gallery will offer Amanda Valdez constructions of canvas and fabric embellished with acrylic, gesso, and embroidery; and Arturo Vega, former creative director for punk legends, the Ramones, will be the focus of La Estacion Gallery (Chihuahua).

Elsewhere in the fair, Patrick Heide Contemporary Art (London), one of six exhibitors selected for TEFAF Showcase in Maastricht this year, will exhibit Sarah Bridgland, Pius Fox, and Thomas MullerBlack & White / Project Space recently created the Black & White Fund to support living, practicing artists by acquiring their art, and working to place it in public institutions through the Fund’s Museum Gift Program. Black & White will launch its inaugural charitable sales campaign at PULSE New York through the sales of new mixed-media work by Alicia Ross. Half of the proceeds from sales will be donated to the Black & White Fund.

WHAT’S YOUR PULSE?
Between April 25 - May 6, 2013, PULSE invites the public to submit and share pictures that make their “pulse race.” If your image grabs the attention of others, you could be on a plane to the Jet Blue destination of your choice! Check out Facebook.com/PULSEArtFair for more information and to enter to win.

HESTER STREET FAIR
Recognizing the lackluster food that often characterizes art fairs, PULSE New York welcomes Hester Street Fair which will offer daily selections of food from some of their favorite vendors.  Hester Street Fair is an outdoor community market in the Lower East Side of New York City that is a hybrid incubator and launching pad for small, independent businesses and artists specializing in unique handmade goods and artisanal food.
