American Modernist Charley Harper (1922 - 2007) Design in the desert consists of 4 rare originals from the estate of Charley Harper, signed artist-proof screenprints from the highly collectable sold out editions, U.S. Department of the Interior poster re-issues, and even sticky birds color-form vinyl sets!
First introduced to American homes though the Ford Times periodicals in the 1950’s, Harper's minimalist renderings convert shapes and behaviors of wildlife’s most recognized forms down to their simplest terms. The graphic nature of his cut-outs and silk-screens were imagined and created before the advent of digital design on personal computers, hence the B.C.PC reference in the shows title.

Puns
Charley had a knack for puns. Notice the titles in his work. With a little further reading you will begin to enjoy the puns he wrote for the paintings. His home is surrounded by woodland so you can tell he was immersed with every sense in his subject.
For example, one of my favorite Harper puns:
From Pier Group - Even on the pier, peer pressure appears. Pelican or person, we all experience persistent and perpetual persuasion to perform like the pack - even if we have to stand on one foot to do it. "I guess you'd go jump in the ocean if your pals did," is a perennial people-parent complaint, when the commendation of contemporaries precludes progenitorial approval. And that's just what a pubescent pelican does with his peers on the pier: jumps in the ocean.

"In our 21st century digital age, Harpers works are timeless and remarkable to witness how this kind of quality was produced by hand before the advent of the personal computer."
