Harland Miller, "Too Cool To Lose,"
2012, silkscreen print,
edition of 50,
25 x 17 15/16".
The theme of language and how it is used uniquely by each of the artists included is the common denominator in TOO COOL TO LOSE. The title, which references one of Harland Miller’s works exemplifies the deadpan humor and sardonic nature of many of the works in the show. Both Miller and Pettibon are writers as well as artists and explore the book as subject/object. Ed Ruscha‘s enigmatic combination of text and image plays with spatial relationships as well as the meaning.
Mel Bochner’s paintings use a staccato sequence of words rendered in impasto relief on an unlikely ground, black velvet and also have a irreverent and humorous twist. Jenny Holzer’s use of text is much “cooler” and more didactic in the counterpoint her bench inscribed with text provides. Works by R. Crumb, William Anastasi and Richard Prince round out the show with jokes, comic book/film noir references and self deprecating references to Pop Art.

Herb Alpert in•ter•course
May 4 - June 8, 2013 Opening reception:
May 4, 2013 from 6-9pm
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Herb Alpert has spent more than half his life as a respected abstract expressionist painter and sculptor, whose work has been exhibited all over the world, from New York to Berlin. Alpert's sculptures, particularly his towering Black Totems series, continue to draw interest with their freedom of form and massive size, with some pieces reaching 18 feet in height. The totems were inspired by indigenous sculptural forms from the Pacific Northwest. What begin as hand-sized forms are scaled up and cast as ten to 18 foot high monoliths.
