Opening this month

Sanctum by Juan Pampin and James Coupe. Photo credit: R.J. Sanchez

Sanctum opens May 4
Sanctum, an interactive art installation, employs surveillance systems to generate cinematic narratives with social media content that matches the demographic profile of passers-by. Artists James Coupe and Juan Pampin seek to explore how traditional ideas and expectations of public personas and private lives are being irrevocably shifted with the advent of social media and the increased presence of cameras in public areas. From passersby who choose to participate in the project, Sanctum will match captured images with with data drawn from social media sites to shape original plausible and implausible ephemeral fictional narratives. Small Change

Small Change
runs May 25 – June 23, 2013
Small Change is a experiment in small, homespun change through tangible activity and face-to-face interaction addressing the themes of reciprocity, barter, debt, and the emergence of markets and related value systems through the creation and distribution of an invented currency. Developed by first-year UW MFA graduate student Rebecca Chernow, the project is the result of an open call to students to develop a project for the Test Site, coinciding with the 2013 MFA graduate exhibition. Continuing exhibitions

Harris Lewis Shacks

Sean Scully: Passages/Impressions/Surfaces through June 5

The Harris and Lewis Shacks portfolio, shot by Sean Scully in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, is a series of 12 close-ups of the worn, haphazardly constructed surfaces of dwellings on the islands of Harris and Lewis. Scully zooms in on the disembodied bands of color, stripes, squares, and rectangles on the facades of these modest, aging buildings, presenting them as an alternative –found/archaic/subjective – point of origin for modern abstraction and, more particularly, for his own practice. Photo credit: Sean Scully. Harris and Lewis Shacks [from a portfolio of twelve]. 1990. Out [o] Fashion Photography: Embracing Beauty through Sept. 1

Out [o] Fashion Photography: Embracing Beauty investigates the transformative experience of the photograph. Paul Laffoley

Paul Laffoley: Premonitions of the Bauharoque through Sept. 15

Paul Laffoley’s work has consistently defied art historical categorization and has systematically engaged a broad swath of disciplines, including art history, architecture, classical literature, science fiction, and natural and occult sciences to consider and rethink the complex world that surrounds us. This exhibition offers a comprehensive and focused selection of works that spans Laffoley’s career, including his most recent ideas, meditations, and theoretical explorations. Image: Paul Laffoley. And introducing VIEWPOINTS, a special new education program on our mezzanine

Viewpoints

VIEWPOINTS through June 16

VIEWPOINTS highlights select works from our permanent collection and offers diverse perspectives of University of Washington faculty members. Multiple voices can help expand our understanding of a work of art, cast a new light on overlooked details, and open our minds to new ideas. This first iteration of VIEWPOINTS features the drawings and performance documentation of Elizabeth Jameson. Over time, VIEWPOINTS will present new combinations of artworks and voices, inspiring and provoking new dialogues and thoughts on works in our permanent collection. Installation imageR.J. Closing this Month

Now Here is also Nowhere: Part II

Now Here is also Nowhere: Part II  through May 5
Now Here is also Nowhere is a two-part meditation and non-linear account of how—in making artworks about ideas and intangible concepts— artists continually question and destabilize the nature of the art object. Part II deals with familiar but largely intangible concepts such as death, love, imagination, memory, knowledge systems, and the unknown. Installation image: R.J. Sánchez

The Dowsing
The Dowsing through May 12
Using fashion as a point of departure, artist/designer Anna Telcs explores the liminal space between form, fashion, presentation, and performance, questioning existing perceptions about manufacturing, worth, and beauty. Image courtesy the artist.
