THIS WEEK'S NEWS
Laurence Graff and Tretchikoff’s Chinese Girl painting
Frequently named as one of the world’s top art collectors (June 2012, Art News) Laurence Graff has added to his already impressive collection with the purchase of Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Chinese Girl painting. Chinese Girl, an iconic work by South African artist Tretchikoff is said to be one of the most widely reproduced and recognisable pictures in the world. Commenting on his recent acquisition, Mr Graff said: “As a young man, I noticed the image of Tretchikoff’s Chinese Girl continuously displayed in many different locations in print form.
“It was the first piece of art that made an impact on me, and I believe ignited my interest and passion for art. You can imagine my surprise to have learned of the sale of the original painting and of course, my decision to buy it was immediate.” Chinese Girl will be returned home to South Africa in Summer 2013, where it will be exhibited at the Delaire Graff Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The painting’s arrival will be marked by a special launch event, which will be used to raise funds for Mr Graff’s charitable foundation, FACET (For Africa’s Children Every Time). Read more
Siemon Allen awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for fine art
Often characterized as "midcareer" awards, Guggenheim Fellowships are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. The Foundation receives between 3,500 and 4,000 applications each year. Approximately 200 Fellowships are awarded each year. For the past twelve years Siemon Allen has been exploring the image of South Africa through a series of collection projects. His studio practice has evolved out of an interest in how mass-produced items—newspapers, stamps, magazines, records—function as carriers of information and operate in the construction of national identity. Records, Allen’s most recent collection project, is rooted in his extensive archive of South African audio consisting of over 2500 items including 650 rare shellac discs. The project has generated a series of varied works sourced from this ongoing audio collection including a number of site responsive installation works, a series of large-scale digital prints, and a searchable web-based database that can be viewed here. Iconic South African artworks spanning 160 years set to go under the hammer in May
A striking number of iconic artworks by South Africa’s foremost artists will lead Strauss & Co’s South African and International Art sale at The Wanderers Club, Illovo, Johannesburg on 20 May 2013.
“What is particularly pleasing about this sale is that the majority of the works consigned have been enjoyed in private collections since their original purchase,” comments Senior Paintings Specialist, Phillippa Duncan. Headlining the auction is JH Pierneef’s Extensive Landscape, Lydenburg, Northern Drakensberg Beyond. Completed in 1932, the same year as the famous Johannesburg Railway Station panels, this panoramic landscape showcases Pierneef’s mastery in capturing the nuances of the South African landscape. This masterful work includes Pierneef’s original hand-made frame, highlighting the dominant blue of the distant mountains. The catalogue cover sports a jewel-like Alexis Preller. Gold Primavera is richly worked in gold leaf and incorporates all the skill and detail for which Preller is renowned. Originally gifted to his close friend, Erich Frey, a well-known jeweller in Pretoria from the 1960s who assisted Preller with a decorative panel for his guest suite, this work was included on both the 1972 Retrospective at the Pretoria Art Museum and the 2009 Preller Standard Bank Gallery exhibition.
