Protocinema presents Can Altay's Inner Space Station, a marker of boundaries in the form of a circular bench, in cooperation with New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Altay's work draws on the limits of public space by creating a temporary inner space, that is, among other things, a simple gesture towards introspection.
Inner Space Station is a concrete, circle-shaped bench, approximately two meters in diameter. The aspect of perception for one seated or viewing the station – from inside or outside of the circle – is not just a matter of physical space, but a wider philosophical question of what is permitted, where and when. Positioned between art and architecture, his bench creation for New York City investigates the functions, meaning, organization and reconfigurations of public spaces. Altay attends to the behavioral experience of individuals, crafting poetic alternatives and supplements to the cityʼs existing urban fabric.
The exhibition is accompanied by a Can Altay - Inner Space Station poster campaign designed by Asli Altay, Founding Partner, Future Anecdotes, Istanbul.
