Columbus Museum of Art Celebrates Local Artists

Exhibition showcases works by recipients of the 2012Greater Columbus Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship Awards and Dresden Residencies

(Columbus, OH) – The Columbus Museum of Art presents the Surface Tension: The 2013 Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) Visual Arts Exhibition June 14 – September 14.Highlighting the outstanding talent and ability of Columbus artists, the exhibition includes work by the recipients of the 2012 GCAC Individual Artist Fellowship Awards : Laura Alexander, Matthew Flegle, Anna Laurie Mackay and Andrea Myers. Two others, Susan Li O’Connor and Mariana Smith, were awarded GCAC residencies in Dresden, Germany this year.

Coincidentally, a concern for both surface and materiality emerges in many of these artists’ works. Paper is not just a support for an image, but in the work of Alexander, Mackay and Myers, a substance to be excavated, layered, cut and woven. Surfaces are formed by repetition and superimposition in Flegle, O’Connor and Smith’s works, with each of their materials and processes carrying its own set of cultural references. Together, their works explore the tension between two-dimensional planes and three-dimensional space, the surface of things and that which holds them together.

The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) and the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) encourage and support cultural development in the Columbus area. In this capacity, GCAC and CMA have partnered to present the 2013 GCAC Visual Arts Exhibition.

Established in 1986 to recognize outstanding local artists, more than 140 awards have been given in a variety of disciplines including visual arts; crafts; film and video; creative writing; music composition; and choreography/movement arts have been made. These awards, based on the quality of work previously created, assist artists in the creation of new work and the advancement of their careers. Through the recognition of this artistic enterprise, the Columbus area remains a vital place where artists can live and work. The GCAC program is one of the few local fellowship programs in the country.

Applicants who make it to the final round of consideration for the Visual Arts Fellowships are eligible to apply for the Dresden/Saxony Residency, a two to three month residency in Dresden, Germany.

Jurors for the 2012 awards were: Janine Cirincione, Director of Sean Kelly Gallery, New York; David Hartz, Associate Professor of Electronic Media Communications, University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash College; and Karen Kunc, Cather Professor of Art, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Through vision and leadership, advocacy and collaboration, the Greater Columbus Arts Council supports art and advances the culture of the region. A catalyst for excellence and innovation, we fund exemplary artists and arts organizations and provide programs, events and services of public value that educate and engage all audiences in our community. GCAC thanks the City of Columbus, Franklin County and the Ohio Arts Council for their continued support.

The Columbus Museum of Art creates great experiences with great art for everyone. The Greater Columbus Arts Council, Nationwide Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, and the Charlotte R. Haller, Lewis K. Osborne, and Robert B. Hurst funds of The Columbus Foundation provide ongoing support.
