Kay Hartmann: What's Wrong With This Picture?

Opening Reception: Friday, May 10, 6-9 p.m.

Artwork by Kay Hartmann

In "What's Wrong With This Picture?" artist and designer Kay Hartmann presents a body of work with commentary on and critique of the breast cancer experience.

In her statement Hartmann writes, "When I got my diagnosis of breast cancer several years ago, I wanted to know as much as possible about this disease, what causes it, what, if anything, cures it, and what the survival rates are.

Why has the incidence of breast cancer among American women increased so alarmingly? Why, when we have spent so much money on breast cancer treatment and research, do we still know so little about what causes this disease? Have we given up trying to cure it, because of the industry that has grown up around breast cancer?

As a graphic and information designer, my job is to take complex information and organize it in ways that people can understand and use. Hopefully, I have succeeded in asking the right questions."

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. Solo and group exhibitions are on display through June 20, 2013.

Literary Events at Woman Made Gallery

Artwork by Polly Greathouse

During the month of May, Woman Made Gallery is proud to be a partner in the  2013 Bodies of Work Festival, a dynamic, international, 11-day celebration that explores the contributions of artists with disabilities, the contemporary contexts of disabled lives, and works that illuminate disability experiences. The following readings are part of this festival:

Reading and Signing with Susan Nussbaum

Saturday, May 18, 2013 / 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. / Free

Susan Nussbaum will read from and sign her first novel, Good Kings Bad Kings, for which she received the 2012 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction.

Poetry Reading Series: "The Body Uncommon"
Sunday, May 19, 2013 / 1:30-3:30 p.m. / Free

Our society tries to press women and men into a standard mold, but few bodies conform to the way they are "supposed to" look or behave. Co-curated by Nina Corwin and Deborah Kent, Woman Made Gallery will explore the experiences of people whose uncommon bodies lead them to live outside the expected norms. Poets Lily Diego and Jim Ferris, essayist and novelist Deborah Kent, acclaimed performance artist Tekki Lomniki, and others will share original work that is informed by, but not limited to, the experience of living with a disability. Please call or email ahead to reserve closed-captioning.
