NEW YORK, NY (May 7th, 2013) Debuting in New York for Pulse Contemporary Art Fair, Los Angeles based artist Tim Youd (www.timyoud.com) will "perform" the entirety of Henry Miller's Tropic of Capricorn on a vintage Underwood Standard typewriter, the same instrument Miller himself used to type this classic and outrageous novel. This ongoing performance will begin on Thursday, May 9th at the Pulse Contemporary Art Fair, run daily through the duration of the fair, and subsequently culminate over the week-long Henry Miller Memorial Library celebration at the City Reliquary in Brooklyn.
Youd's retyping of the novel not only creates a single page of dense indentation - an abstraction truly overfilled with content - but is also an act of sustained performance. While he types, Youd reads out loud each of the words. The sound of the typewriter and the spoken words together creates a syncopated rhythm that brings the text to life in a surprising manner. Youd will further explore the sonic implications of his performance when he is joined by renowned experimental guitarist Phil DeGruy for a "duet" on the sidewalk outside the Reliquary.
As a companion piece, Youd constructs a replica of the same typewriter out of cardboard, foam and wood. This replica is placed in a frame that is mounted perpendicular to the wall, such that the typewriter is experienced in the round.
Youd's work is both an homage to and a usurpation of works from the literary canon. The work is not a facile exercise in the notion of being "inspired by" some famous author. Every word of the selected novel, and every stroke of the typewriter key used in writing it, are captured. And the tool - the typewriter - used in the making is itself venerated. And yet, the text is obscured, the typewriter deconstructed and the spoken word abstracted in the artist's process.
