Monash University Museum of Art Forum: Disobedience The Monash Labor Club and student struggles of the 1960s and '70s Date: Wednesday 22 May 2013 Time: 5.30 - 7.30pm Venue: Monash University Museum of Art Free: Bookings required Convener: Dr Kate Murphy, Lecturer in Contemporary History, Monash University Speakers: Darce Cassidy, Mike Hyde, Jill Jolliffe, Ken Mansell and Dave Nadel Disobedience will focus on the origins of student activism at Monash University and the student 'struggles' of The Monash Labor Club in the 1960s and '70s; their unique understanding of Marxism and the application of their praxis to contemporary forms of occupation, Situationism, information technology and knowledge production. Direct Democracy Showing until 6 July 2013 A thematic group exhibition, Direct Democracy looks to the evolution of new democratic models in emerging and established democracies. Recent political shifts such as the Arab Spring, the global financial crisis and Occupy form a ground against which earlier struggles for autonomy and self-definition are explored.
