Capitain Petzel is delighted to announce that Maria Lassnig will receive the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the 55th Venice Biennale (1 June - 24 Nov 2013).

Maria Lassnig (born 1919, Austria) has always focused on self-portaiture in what she calls "body-awareness paintings". Her work was exhibited at the Austrian Pavilion during the 1980 Venice Biennale and the documenta 1982 and the documenta 1997 and has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions.

"Lassnig, at ninety-three years old, represents a unique example of obstinacy and independence that deserves to be celebrated with the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement," said Massimiliano Gioni, the curator of the 55th Venice Biennale in the press release.



Capitain Petzel is currently showing nine paintings by Maria Lassnig, most of which were created in the last three years. The exhibition is on view until June 18th, 2013.
