Medusa Art Gallery @ Art-athina 2013

16 May– 19 May  2013

Faliro Sports Pavilion Arena (Tae Kwon Do)

Medusa Art Gallery will present the works of six artists associated with the gallery in Art-Athina 2013. The works by Ioulia Ventikou Costas Coulentianos,,Miltos Michailidis, Dora Pulmann, Giorgos Rorris and Nakis Tastsioglou will be on show at stand No.G1.

Each and every one of  Ventikou’s most recent works uses humour, esotericism, patience, and rhythm in order to insinuate a non-verbal story: it’s an annihilation of reason and language.
Here, spirituality, fantasy, and dreams do not clash with realism, but work as a parallel reality to the cruelty of things.

Costas Coulentianos shaped his aesthetic identity through a discourse between ancient sculpture and the abstractive quests of contemporary. The clarity of the plastic forms which is a standard trait in his work results from his dialectical relationship with the technique and his respect for the natural behaviour of the materials.
With these works, Miltos Michailidis creates a parallel visual reality in which the traditions of Catholic faith and the figure of the Crucifix are mingled with those of the Orthodox creed in a tour with seemingly different starting points yet the same ending.

In an always inventive watershed between what is natural and what metaphysical, between material tangibility and spiritual intangibility, Dora Pulmann puts forth the rhythms of cosmogony. In fact, as the very “Idea” of motion has been deciphered here along with the rhythm identified with it, Pulmann’s oeuvres tally with the Platonic definition of art: that is, in order to be authentic it is obliged to contain an idea and not constitute an imitation.
Giorgos Rorris draws his subjects from his everyday surroundings and chooses the familiar confines of his studio as the backdrop for his models. As his work progresses he seeks persistently the particular physical characteristics of each figure, at the same time delving into the subject’s inner world. During the long process of painting, which often becomes an act of mutual confession, space is often extended into new areas so as to take in the figure, mutating for the needs of each new composition and emerging as a different and autonomous setting each time.

Nakis Tastsioglou uses his trademark material, plexiglas, to play with its transparency and with illusions, with the concepts of presence and absence. The course he carves for the viewer is full of surprises and generates allegories and symbolisms to retrieve from oblivion the universal feelings of existential solitude, companionship, security or anxiety and fear of the unknown. The artist uses a fresh look and an industrial aesthetic to treat this age-old subject with humour, deliberately changing the viewer’s mood back and forth.
