CURRENT EXHIBITION
Empujando Tinta
Tupac Amaru: Ten Years of Collaborative Activism
Now through Thursday, June 20
Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 12pm-6pm

Galería is pleased to present Empujando Tinta, an exhibition celebrating 10 years of works by Taller Tupac Amaru (the Taller), a collective art studio founded in 2003 by Bay Area artists Favianna Rodriguez and Jesus Barraza, and joined by Melanie Cervantes in 2007. Over the past 10 years, the Taller has dedicated itself to revitalizing the screen printing medium through the production of political posters and fine art prints, which have received national and global acclaim. All three artists work with service and advocacy organizations, using art to mobilize around social justice issues and also with individual artists on commissions or collaborations. Over 150 works from the Taller are now on view covering immigration, socioeconomics, political justice, and people’s stories of resistance and resilience from around the globe.

On Wednesday, May 15, Galería invites the public to attend a live screen printing demo, a talk between artists Jesus Barraza of Taller Tupac Amaru and Nancy Hom, and a mandala creation and ceremony led by Hom. Barraza will be re-working an original image done by Hom for Carnaval San Francisco in the 1970s, creating a version that honors and revitalizes the storied festival in 2013. Attendees are encouraged to take posters and canvas the Mission and beyond to spread word of the festival, which will take place May 25-26. Concurrently, Hom will guide attendees to contribute to a six-foot mandala dedicated to Carnaval, capturing the feeling and excitement of Carnavals past and present. Photographs by Lou Dematteis of past Carnaval events will also be displayed during the event. Art supplies will be available for participants who wish to create a component to put in the mandala. People will be invited to draw, collage and/or paint their impressions of Carnaval.

The Carnaval San Francisco mandala is supported in part by the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant awarded to Hom in 2012.

UPCOMING PROGRAMMING
Lunada Literary Lounge
Friday, May 24
7:30pm  |  $5 admission

The spring season is thriving, the temperature is rising, and there’s a warm front approaching from the South with Lunada’s May featured artists, Lizz Huerta and V. Lazaro Zamora, who will be sharing poetry and fiction. These visiting writers from Los Angeles and San Diego, respectively, are arriving for the Full Flower Moon (aka Mother’s Moon), on the weekend of Carnaval San Francisco, a 35-year San Francisco tradition celebrating music and cultural elements from Latin America. Galería will be the launching pad for a full weekend of festivities, so bring your Carnaval stories, poetry, and songs, and let your creativity bloom under the full moon.

Held every month, on the night of the full moon, Lunada Literary Lounge series is a community gathering where stories, food, songs, and spirit are shared. Located in the heart of the Mission District at Galería de la Raza, each Lunada features community poets, local legends, visiting mystics, and other mero meros of the stage.

Sign-ups at 7:15pm; first timers always welcome.

IN AND AROUND GALERÍA
Carnaval San Francisco is happening this year!

Join us tonight for the King and Queen contest at Brava Theater. For over three decades, Carnaval San Francisco has been an event for many cultures to come together in one spirit to share their creative expression. This year’s theme is Carnaval Harlem Shake, taking place on eight city blocks in San Francisco’s Mission District, and promises a weekend bursting with music, dance, and exotic food from the many countries that celebrate Carnaval.

May volunteer opportunities now live
Galería is back in action!

We are open to the public post-renovation, with brand new paint jobs, floors, and updated facilities, ready to go! We are currently seeking to bring on dynamic and outgoing individuals for our gallery attendant program. Gallery attendants are crucial to the mechanics of running Galería. It is a chance to interact with a high volume of people on a daily basis, learn and implement the sale of artwork, and assist in the public programming details of presenting events at a non-profit arts space. We are also looking for help for our upcoming public programs with Jesus Barraza of Taller Tupac Amaru and Nancy Hom on Wednesday, May 15, and at the May Lunada on Friday, May 24.

Join us as a volunteer and experience the organization from a behind-the-scenes viewpoint. It’s no secret that much of the Galería’s success is in part due to the arsenal of volunteers who make our machine well-oiled!

Latino Artist Fellowship at Root Division
Applications due Saturday, June 1

Root Division, a visual arts non-profit in the Mission that connects creativity and community, is currently seeking applicants for the 2013-14 Latino Teaching Artist Fellowship. The applicant will act as the Resident Teaching Artist at Mission Education Center, a K-5 school for newly arrived immigrant students who speak only Spanish. Part of the commitment involves adapting an existing curriculum & project called My Two Homes, in which students participate in discussions and art-making around their transition to a new home in the U.S.

New film by Carlos Reygadas at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Screening May 30 through June 2

Post Tenebras Lux by maverick Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas is his most personal and challenging work to date. The film is a disorienting, kaleidoscopic, and visually-stunning vision of a family torn between compassion and violence. It completely divided audiences at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where Reygadas was awarded Best Director.
