Explore Life, Death, and Transformation in the Americas at the Brooklyn Museum's June 1 Target First Saturday

Rebel Diaz On June 1, Target First Saturday celebrates the reinstallation of the Museum's Arts of the Americas collection and the influence of indigenous societies on contemporary culture. Target First Saturday events attract thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. June highlights include:

5-10 p.m. Music: Performances by Claudia Acuņa at 5 p.m., Chicha Libre at 7:30 p.m., and Rebel Diaz at 9 p.m.

6-8:30 p.m. Music: New York's only all-female mariachi band, Mariachi Flor de Toloache, performs a modern take on traditional mariachi.

6-9 p.m. Storytelling: A storyteller from the Redhawk Native American Arts Council tells stories inspired by the Arts of the Americas collection.

6-9 p.m. Pop-up Gallery Talks: Brief discussions of some of the Museum's most intriguing works.

6:30 p.m. Curator Talk: Nancy Rosoff, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of the Arts of the Americas, and Susan Kennedy Zeller, Associate Curator of Native American Art, discuss the collection.

6:30-8:30 Hands-on Art: Sculpt a clay figure inspired by the installation Life, Death, and Transformation in the Americas.

7 p.m. Performance: Afro-Peruvian percussionist Marcos Napa and his group present the music and dance of Peru.

7 p.m. Interactive Space: Q'ero healers Don Francisco and Doņa Juana from the Peruvian Andes present a despacho ceremony invoking ayni, or reciprocity, for loving-kindness and the maintenance of life.

Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 10 p.m.

Museum admission is free from 5 to 10 p.m. and includes entrance to all galleries and events. Programs subject to change without notice. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines for free tickets often form thirty minutes in advance.
