Frank Lloyd Wright's Samara: A Mid-Century Dream Home

“I believe a house is more a home by being a work of Art.” Frank Lloyd Wright, The Natural House, 1954

On Friday, Price Tower Arts Center will be hosting the Opening Celebration to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Samara: A Mid Century Dream Home. Members preview reception will be from 5 - 6pm with a gallery talk with Samara staff and the free public opening reception will be from 6 - 7pm.

The 1950s were a time when the notion of hiring an architect to design your dream home was still a possibility for a middle income family. Kay and John Christian truly enjoyed the dream home Frank Lloyd Wright created for them. It was comfortable enough to lead a private lifestyle and raise their daughter Linda, yet flexible enough to accommodate family celebrations, holiday parties and social events from time to time.

As one of only eight clients still occupying their Wright dream homes, Dr. Christian has greeted over 50,000 visitors to his home, sharing stories about his meetings with Wright and experiences of living in an architect designed dream home.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Samara: A Mid-Century Dream Home features over 55 objects, including original furnishings, architectural drawings, textiles, and ephemera, as well as dozens of rare archival images from the Christian family. It is the hope of Dr. Christian and the caretakers of Samara that, through these objects, one can better understand not only Wright’s Usonian architecture, but the lives of those inhabiting his homes.

Copper Bar is providing food and beverages the evening of the opening. This exhibition will be on view from Friday through September 8, 2013. For more information contact Price Tower Arts Center at (918) 336-4949.

Price Tower is Frank Lloyd Wright’s only realized skyscraper design, located in the heart of downtown Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Completed in 1956, the tower was designed to be a multifaceted building with living, dining, shopping and work spaces.  The top three floors were restored to their original interior specifications and can be viewed on a guided tour.  Price Tower Arts Center, through its generous donors, has been able to return the historic building to its multipurpose origination where it now houses a boutique hotel, bar and museum.

Price Tower Arts Center is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to the historic preservation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s only build skyscraper, the Price Tower while providing the public with access and programming to keep the spirit of Wright alive.
