Could secularized narratives and the impasse of modern rationalism be producing a world devoid of wonder? But consider that knowledge never draws straight lines…
On 25 May 2013 The World Turned Inside Out begins with a dynamic series of seven events taking place at Witte de With throughout the summer and orchestrated by the program’s protagonists and their guests from the fields of the arts, academia and science. Continuing into the Fall of 2013, lines of inquiry extend into the curatorial, educational and online publishing activities of Witte de With, and culminate with the establishment of a collaborative network of partner organizations, both in Rotterdam and throughout the world.
Launch: Saturday 25 May (12-3 PM):
Asli Çavusoglu (Istanbul) on Lapis Lazuli and Ancient Blue, with Sarah Searight (artist and collector, London) and Robert Kluijver (curator and critic, The Hague).
Lapis lazuli, why so blue?
A crowned blue gemstone extracted from the sepia-colored Hindu Kush mountains bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan, Lapis Lazuli used to be the only way to feel the tangibility of the sky, the sea and heaven. Being the first natural blue, it dazzled the deities reining the Ancient Mesopotamian underworld and traveled from beyond the sea to paint the robes of the Madonna. Until the nineteenth century, it has mainly been considered as the color of heavenly blue, hence its historical association with the celestial sphere that marks the sacred boundaries of our universe. Online platform
Launch: 25 May 2013

The multiple journeys instigated by The World Turned Inside Out will echo in ancient cities around the world through the prism of WdW Review, our new online platform launching on 25 May set to run for a period of three years. Correspondents from desks established in Jerusalem (Lara Khaldi), Cairo (Yasmine El Rashidi), Athens (Yanis Varoufakis and vitalspace.org), Istanbul (Erden Kosova), Moscow (Ekaterina Degot), Beijing (Ou Ning), and more to come will consider how their respective cultural fields have taken, and are, taking shape. Sections dedicated to debate, image analysis, and speculative essays will further expand the wonderings of The World Turned Inside Out’s protagonists and their guests, beginning with a reverie by Landings (Natasha Ginwala and Vivian Ziherl) about the ‘Dragon Jar’, the first seismograph and a grounding source of inspiration for the whole project.
