CAM Chief Curator Named RISD Museum’s Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art

May 15, 2013 (St. Louis, MO) — Lisa Melandri, director of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM), announces today that CAM Chief Curator Dominic Molon has been appointed as the Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design (RISD Museum), beginning September 2013. “We are incredibly happy for Dominic,” says Melandri. “The position at the RISD Museum is a perfect fit for his talents, and we congratulate him on this wonderful new opportunity.”

Molon has served as chief curator at CAM since 2010. His recent exhibitions include Leslie Hewitt: Sudden Glare of the Sun, Jonathan Horowitz: Your Land/My Land: Election ’12, and Christodoulos Panayiotou: One Thousand and One Days. He is also a co-curator of Place is the Space, an exhibition of site-specific architectural projects that will be on view at CAM this fall, and is the curator for Martin Boyce, also upcoming at CAM.

“I have had an extraordinary time developing and overseeing CAM’s exhibition program since joining the institution in 2010,” says Molon. “It has been my great privilege to bring the work of some of the most exciting contemporary artists to St. Louis and to be welcomed into the city’s vibrant and dynamic art community. As I accept a new challenge at RISD, I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible CAM family in the future.”

Prior to joining CAM, Molon served as curator and acting curatorial department head for the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Chicago, where he worked in various curatorial and research positions since 1994. In addition to his work at CAM, Molon regularly contributes to several art publications, makes public presentations, lectures widely across the United States, and serves on international advisory committees. He received his master’s degree in art history and criticism from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and his bachelor’s degree in the history of art and architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

At the RISD Museum, Molon will be responsible for the interpretation, development, and care of the museum’s significant collection of contemporary art—including paintings, sculpture, and new media—with an emphasis on exhibitions, publications, community engagement, and acquisitions. CAM will commence a search for a new curator.
