Oakland, CA: Pro Arts presents PROJECT: Mitra Fabian on view May 12 - June 27 at Pro Arts' gallery in downtown Oakland.

 

Mitra Fabian is a sculptor and installation artist working with industrial materials such as office supplies and scientific products. As she builds with these materials she alters them in ways that hide their original identity, shifting them towards new, organic states.  

 

Fabian explains, "My artwork is a reflection of local human industry. I am a sculptor and installation artist working almost exclusively with manufactured materials- the leftovers, the by products, the remnants of human activity. My material use serves as a commentary on the increasingly modified condition of humans, which pits nature against culture and blurs the line between organic and manufactured."

Displayed in Pro Arts' PROJECT window, Fabian's Reckoning uses thousands of feet of receipt paper to create an installation that explores line, movement, and pattern. Normally used to tally purchases, receipt paper in this instance remains unmarked. The accounting is the roll's length which is unfurled and then re-rolled to create hypnotic concentric loops and dramatic swags, transforming the wall into three-dimensional canvas.

About the Artist: Mitra Fabian was born in Iran, raised in Boston, and currently resides in the Bay Area. She received a BA in Art from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio and an MFA from California State University, Northridge. Fabian has recently had solo exhibitions at Don Stoker Contemporary Art in San Francisco and the Kondos Gallery in Sacramento. She has also shown her work at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Laguna Art Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Craft, Portland. In July of 2012, Fabian completed a Residency at the Centre d'Art, Marnay Art Centre, Marnay, France.
