LSO presents Tchaikovsky’s Symphony
No.4
Sunday 19 May, 7.30pm
Barbican Hall, Silk St, London EC2Y 8DS
Sir Antonio Pappano returns to the LSO to conduct Tchaikovsky’s
Fourth Symphony. A turbulent, dramatic work, it is also one of the
composer’s most deeply personal pieces of music; after the premiere
he wrote, ‘There is a not a single line in this Symphony that I have
not felt in my whole being and that has not been a true echo of the
soul’. The music depicts both the inevitability of fate, a force
Tchaikovsky felt ruled his life, and fleeting moments of blissful
happiness.
In this concert, Pappano also marks the centenary year of Polish
composer Witold LutosÅ‚awski by pairing Tchaikovsky’s Symphony with
the spectacular Concerto for Orchestra, a tour de force of vivid
instrumental colours and vital, folk-infused melodies.

Valery Katsuba Photography Exhibition
8 March - 20 June
ArtMost Foundation, 20
Charles St, London, W1J 5DT
ArtMost Gallery announces its new
exhibition "Velocius, altius, fortus" presenting work by contemporary
Russian photographer Valery Katsuba. The show features images from
Valery’s acclaimed series "Phiscultura" (1998-2008) and "Air Flight"
(2010), as well as his new work. “Phiscultura" and "Air Flight" came
to life as a result of Valery’s research in the State Archives where
he discovered images of athletes in sporting societies of the late Imperial
Russia made by the prominent photographer of that time Karl Bulla, as well
as heroic portraiture of athletes in the Soviet era.

Houghton Revisited: Masterpieces from the Hermitage
17 May – 29 September 2013 Houghton Hall, King’s Lynn,
Norfolk PE31 6UE
One of the most eagerly anticipated events this summer for the UK art
world will be the return of around 60 masterpieces from the Hermitage
Museum in St Petersburg to their former home, Houghton Hall in Norfolk.
Most of these paintings have never left Russia since their acquisition by
Catherine the Great in 1779 from the private collection of former prime
minister Robert Walpole, and their brief visit to England provides a rare
opportunity to see these masterpieces in a stunning country setting.
Artists featured include Murillo, Poussin, Rembrandt, Rubens and Van
Dyck.
