JOHN MOORES CALL FOR ENTRIES

The UK’s biggest painting prize moves to summer

The hunt to discover the next big name in painting starts on 22 July 2013.

All UK-based artists who work with paint are invited to submit work to be considered for the John Moores Painting Prize 2014 and be in with the chance of winning the £25,000 first prize or one of the four £2,000 runner up prizes.

Online registration can be found at: www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/johnmoores from 22 July 2013.

The call for entries runs until 25 October 2013.

Running for 56 years the influential competition has traced key developments in painting over the last half a century. Previous winners include: David Hockney, Sir Peter Blake (now patron of the prize), Mary Martin and Peter Doig.

In an exciting shift from previous years, the final exhibition, which forms a major strand of the Liverpool Biennial, will open as a summer show on 5 July 2014, with the winners announced in September 2014.

Alongside the Liverpool Biennial, the exhibition dates coincide with the Liverpool International Festival of Business, which is expected to attract a million visitors from across the globe.

Director of Art Galleries, Sandra Penketh said: “The John Moores Painting Prize is a major event in the UK art calendar and by bringing the exhibition in line with other events happening in the city next summer we’re hopeful of an even more exciting competition than ever before!

“For any painter the chance to exhibit in the John Moores is a major achievement and means joining the ranks of some of the most important British painters from the past five decades.

“We’re looking forward to receiving a broad range of entries which truly reflect the diversity and power of paint.”

The works are selected anonymously from an open submission by an independent jury (to be announced shortly). Previous jurors have included Alan Yentob, Tracey Emin, Jarvis Cocker, Jake and Dinos Chapman and Germaine Greer.
