Amy Zucker

Restraint(S) is an investigation of the dichotomy of the word restraint; how they are used juxtaposed with the meaning that popular culture applies. While the viewer may be pulled in through curiosity, the reality of the struggle presents itself. This work originates from Zucker's profession as a nurse. Experiences of intimacy that blur boundaries are familiar and can be in opposition to caregiving as society defines it.  Through examination of the object, an opportunity to engage in the conversation is offered.

The Mind of ZEKTAR5000 is a thoughtful balance of traditional graphic design fused with expressive influences of popular culture and graphite art. Gonzalez' work can be more broadly categorized as collage, mixing acrylic painting techniques and imagery manipulated through print media. The imagery is often figurative, taken from a collection of printed resources, which provide a kind of narrative.

The narrative aspect of the work is situated around metaphor which allows the viewer freedom to engage the emotional and psychological interpretation of the work from various angles. The subjects might seem aggressive or confrontational, but Gonzalez' work is more about questioning the power of imagery and how it can be manipulated in our media driven society.

John Dempsey Dempsey June 2013

We experience our environment sequentially, by immersion and over real time, temporally, spatially and causally.

Dempsey's paintings in this exhibit entitled being there are composed in order to confront a variety of environments and perspectives all at once. They bring together a variety of spaces and include factories, churches, government facilities, public spaces and landscapes for the purpose of an immediate experience, response and comparison.

The compositions are not narrative. They are arrived at more intuitively. They reference the complexity of contemporary social systems and the partitioning of our various environments.

Our complex contemporary environment conspires to create a discontinuous experience of place. We move through a collage of industrial, post-industrial, modern and post-modern environments and then work to resolve how to understand landscape and nature within this experience of place. These compositions are offered in order to visually explore and chronicle our complex relationship to place.
