Botero is, in the best sense of the word, a classical painter and sculptor working in a distinctive and contemporary context. His unique, recognizable style, a necessary hallmark of every great master, is universally recognized, admired and adored. Botero’s works are loved throughout Europe, Russia, the Middle and Far East, as well as the Americas. The work has the magic of operating independently from cultural and religious backgrounds. His paintings and sculptures are rooted deeply in the art history of the west, but their international resonance is born of Botero’s unique ability to create timeless tableau that traverse standard perceptions of place based culture. A new, fully illustrated, publication from Galerie Gmurzynska will include an interview with Botero as well as documentary pictures from his personal archive. Written in both English and Chinese it will be presented for the first time at Art Basel Hong Kong. His personal curation has brought together some of the most important and enchanting works he has completed, and the personal interview and in-depth appendix in this book will continue to provide scholastic inspiration on the sources, themes and motivations for his work as a whole.
