Sonic Generator: Metropolis
Tuesday, May 28, 8 pm
outdoor screening + performance
at Woodruff Arts Center Piazza
free + open to the public

Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction masterpiece “Metropolis” is presented with a live performance by Sonic Generator of Martin Matalon's new musical score.  “Metropolis,” a milestone of German expressionism and an inspiration for science fiction films such as “Blade Runner” and “The Matrix,” portrays a dystopian world in which the poor tend to futuristic machines and inevitably clash with the wealthy elite. Recently found footage in Argentina has restored “Metropolis” to its original length.

Sonic Generator's performance—featuring sixteen instrumentalists and electronic sounds—will present the American premiere of Matalon's score for this newly restored edition. Performed on the piazza at the Woodruff Arts Center with the film screened dramatically onto the High Museum of Art, “Metropolis” will showcase an iconic film and cutting-edge music in a unique space. Bring your own beach chairs and blankets and settle in for an unforgettable experience.

Accessible parking and special seating area will be available.

In case of rain, check www.sonicgenerator.gatech.edu for updates.

About Sonic Generator
Founded in 2006, Sonic Generator is the contemporary music ensemble in residence at Georgia Tech dedicated to using technology to transform the ways in which we compose, perform, and listen to music. The group works closely with students and faculty across campus to implement technology in concert and to incorporate new research into live performance.

Sonic Generator presents a diverse lineup of music by composers such as Steve Reich, John Cage, Mario Davidovsky, Brian Eno, Louis Andriessen, and Terry Riley; it is also committed to performing music of younger composers and to commissioning new works. Sonic Generator's experiments with new technologies have led the group to perform with wine glasses, iPhones, comic strips, car speakers, DJs, and a robotic drummer. The ensemble also frequently collaborates with visual artists to create video projections to accompany its performances.
