Alan Cristea Gallery reported consistently excellent sales to mostly local collectors on the first day of Art Basel HK.
As well as presenting unique works by gallery-represented artists such as Edmund De Waal, Vicken Parons and Marie Harnett - whose Series 26 sold for $175,000 HKD to the first collector at the booth – the gallery also presented prints and editions by a mix of younger artists and blue chip artists.
Director David Cleaton-Roberts remarked on the increased interest and trust that local collectors were placing in print works. He observed that collectors were now buying to taste rather than for well recognised names.
David praised the Hong Kong collectors for having a keen interest in learning about younger artists and remarked on the number of younger collectors at the fair, as well as established collectors who seem to be now branching out into new areas.
Alan Cristea Gallery’s universal policy for transparency - displaying prices for both prints and unique works at fairs and within their two London gallery spaces - seemed to generate a confidence and trust in the gallery from the Hong Kong collectors.
This trend was reflected by equally excellent sales for Pace Prints and leading Spanish print gallery Poligrafa, both of whom displayed prices and reported that prints sold particularly well and mostly to Hong Kong Collectors, in comparison with previous years.
Poligrafa remarked that in previous years there has sometimes been a hesitancy towards collecting works on paper from collectors living in hotter Asian countries such as Singapore, where the humidity and air conditioning were seen as threat to maintaining works, although improved framing technology combined with a speedy education amongst collectors have been reflected by a fast developing market.
The sales also reflected the growing strength of the middle market in this region.
Please see below for key sales from Alan Cristea Gallery, Pace Prints and Poligrafa as off 6pm on the first day Wednesday 22 May.
