AMANDA FRIEDMAN & LAURA HUNT:
THE ALFRED JENSEN PAINTING AT BELLEVUE HOSPITAL

OPENING SUNDAY MAY 26, 8-11 PM

Spare Room Projects is pleased to present a two-person exhibition by Amanda
Friedman and Laura Hunt titled The Alfred Jensen Painting at Bellevue Hospital.

Their works share an interest in phenomenal existence and engage languages both
written and unspoken. Their choice of materials clarifies the transcendence, as
well as vulnerability, prominent within psychic subject matter.

Friedman will present three works from Thought-forms, her current series of
two-sided paper construction paintings. Akin to cloud storage or a speech bubble
these pieces are material stand-ins for emotions or ideas. Bulky irregular
masses, they paradoxically inhabit the role of elephant in a room. Thought-form:
Cliff will be installed on the ceiling of the exhibition space. In the backyard,
Thought-form: Focus will be held within the branches of a tree and Thought-form:
Spotlight Synesthesia? will hang off the picket fence. During the opening,
Spotlight will demarcate the stage for live music by Kalmia (of Rubblebucket)
who will be performing a sound collage, playing sax over looped recordings from
a recent trip to New Orleans.

Hunt channels language, humor, and erotic power into her paintings on walls,
panels, objects, and dichroic Plexiglas. Her practice involves an exploration of
the absurd as a resource for illumination. With voice recordings, face painting,
inverted and androgynous dress, and wigs, she engages her own body as a
laughably flexible illusion. Hunt will show paintings on doors and light-switch
plates which transform the exhibition space into a blunt mystery. She has
invited Emily Hunt and Lina Makdisi to read poems on June 1st at 5PM.

Friedman and Hunt's collaboration, solidified through correspondence, is rich
with individual and shared ideas, experiences, and feelings about poetry, books,
and the social and personal structures surrounding art shows. This exhibition
thus marks a convergent moment in time in which two friends have worked both
together and separately to display these works.

Amanda Friedman (b.1984, Washington, DC) lives in Brooklyn. In conjunction with
this exhibition, she held a parade with dancing friends and flying paintings, it
stretched the four blocks from her studio to the Spare Room space and culminated
in this installation. The documentation of the event has been added to her
growing collection of movement images/video stills (a selection will be
published as a flip-book by Peredam this fall). Friedman has participated in
residencies at The Vermont Studio Center and The Shandaken Project and studied
art at the University of Vermont and the Glasgow School of Art. Her work has
been included in exhibitions at Clifton Benevento and Artists Space, New York;
Nudashank, Baltimore; and Vox Populi, Philadelphia. She had a solo exhibition
last fall at Eli Ping Gallery, New York.

Laura Hunt (b.1985, Amsterdam) lives and works in Brooklyn. She studied art and
poetry in New Orleans. This year she has had two solo exhibitions, at A Slender
Gamut and Weekend Projects, as well as participated in the group show Billpost
at Eli Ping Gallery. Hunt regularly posts artwork and text to a blog:
huntlaura.blogspot.com .

Spare Room Projects is located at 81 Central Ave (1A), between Melrose and
Jefferson street, in a ground floor apartment building in the Bushwick
neighborhood of Brooklyn. The exhibition is open the night of the reception,
May 26, 2013, 8PM to 11PM. SRP will be participating in Bushwick Open Studios
with additional open hours Friday, May 31, 7-9 PM, and the following Saturday
and Sunday from 12-7PM. All other viewings are available by appointment until
June 16. For additional information please contact:
