Arts in Motion

Taiwanese American Contemporary Art

The curatorial concept is based on the fact that since the late twentieth century, artists have needed to be involved in the studio, in the community, in the media, and in academic circles.  At the same time, continual drastic transformations in economy, demographics, and communication have had a revolutionary effect upon the art world and added a layer of complexity to art. These manifold influences have liberated artists as well as imposed new constraints on them. Stimuli from different sources and the consequent effects on artists have made it more difficult to classify artists, who now frequently work in various media. Instantaneous communication and frequent movements of immigrant groups have paradoxically made art more local, since artists are driven to find ways to express their cultural identity in contravention of established native standards. Simultaneously, previously disdained art forms have found new favor and helped give birth to new media. These powerful trends are having a profound impact on the art community that shares common resources and complex ambitions. In this Arts in Motion program, there will be a cross-collaboration between visual artists Lin Shih Pao, MolMol Kuo and Nung Hsin Hu and YUNG-LI DANCE.  The program will contain new technology, a kinetic work, and an art work addressing recycling, and will be performed during the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month both in ASA College and at Union Square North.

Nung Hsin HU Taste, 2013

Nung Hsin HU (胡農欣) Taste

TASTE: This see-saw structure will be giant chopsticks holding a food-tongue like object which will change shape with the movement of the see-saw. When the audience operates the see-saw, a sound and light installation will be triggered.

Following her "Sushi" pieces, Nung Hsin chose food as a subject matter to distinguish the different ethnic culture of the immigrant in a foreign land. The current work is an interactive toy-like structure, providing a fun, mocking feeling. At the same time, the color and shape of the tongue carry associations of organic desire and a seductive atmosphere.

Molmol KUO(郭沛丰)     Walk in Shelter

The Walk in Shelter is a documentary, a film project which combines a robotic sculpture that walks through the five boroughs of New York with video interviews that the artist

filmed. As a documentary film maker, Molmol is looking for new techniques and strategies to bring the stories she captures to the world.

This project features a robotic sculpture that walks to find its viewers on the street.  The robot is reactive, it senses the proximity of viewers on the street and is engaging. It creates conversation and an entry point into a difficult topic.

The inspiration for this walking temple came from a temple festival in Taiwan; in these temple festivals, people carry statues of gods in the small temple shelter that is paraded down the streets and through various counties to bring the blessing everywhere. Her piece will be a 21st century temple that adapts robotics to interact with onlookers.

LIN Shih Pao  Sun in Action, 2013
LIN Shih Pao (林世寶)

Sun in Action :

This project is contemporary handicraft; the artist intends to use versatile human hands to create a new technology and provide a salute to the Sun. In this project, Lin will recycle plastic to make a symbolically solar-powered car to express passion, light, and warm feeling. This car will represent endurance to carry burdens and run long distances. And it will bring even more positive influence. It will help to spread the concept of earth protection, global warming, energy saving, solar products, new energy, and the idea that all creatures must rely on each other.

YUNG-LI DANCE(詠俐舞蹈團) P2T Dance duet
YUNG-LI DANCE      P2T

YUNG-LI DANCE presents P2T - a duet reflecting the themes of identity and journey featuring Yung-Li Chen and Wedee Kao.

The United States is a nation comprised of immigrants coming from diverse backgrounds to pursue the American dream. Not only do these travelers attempt to fit into the American lifestyle, they attempt to keep their own culture alive while doing so. This duet, arranged especially for the 2013 Passport to Taiwan Festival, celebrates this busy challenge and utilizes passports and suitcases to symbolize cultural identity and journey. The dancers' choreography will focus upon the challenges set forth in achieving a harmony of culture and understanding.

Mark Salinas, Set Designer of YUNG-LI DANCE, will design and fabricate a 4-foot tall Taiwanese passport, which will open, serving as both stage backdrop and suitcase for the dancers.
