HUDSON VALLEY CENTER for CONTEMPORARY ART (HVCCA) is pleased to announce new artworks being installed throughout the city for the final two months of PEEKSKILL PROJECT V.
âCurtain Call,â a group exhibition activates a formerly vacant factory space near the Peekskill waterfront. This exhibition focuses on performance and interactive art, and includes works by Z Behl, Andrea Bianconi, Pepe Coronado, Chad Stayrook, among others. The exhibition will be open from 2-6pm on June 9th, with a reception from 4-6pm, but then afterwards by appointment only through July 28th. We will also be debuting two new outdoor works in town on this day, a sculpture by Kai Vierstra and a mural by Nestor Madalengoitia.
During the June 9th event, Marcy B. Freedman will use Washington Irving's famous short story,
âRip Van Winkle,â as the starting point for a performance entitled
âOnce Upon a Time is Now,â where she invites members of the public to have one-on-one discussions with her. The ensuing dialogs about past, present, and future will be incorporated by Freedman into her own version of the story to be recorded for a future sound piece. This work is part of Freedmanâs on-going series of face-to-face interactive performances designed to bring real people together in real time and real space. Freedmanâs ultimate goal is to provide members of the public with an antidote to the many virtual forms of communication â email, texting, blogging, and social networking â that are coming to dominate our interpersonal interactions.
Chad Stayrook will continue his project
âAn Adventure (in three parts)â with
âPart 2: The Narration,â at 4pm, verbally recalling memories of his 5-day journey up the Hudson River in as much detail as possible. A harpist will be on hand to accompany the narration, and a tattoo artist will be giving Stayrook simple tattoos that were designed to represent each day of his journey.
Pepe Coronadoâs work, â
El Rio Como VÃnculo / The River as a Link,â is a collaborative project by Coronado and artists he invited from various communities along the Hudson River. The group has created a series of prints based on their experiences with the river.
Installing her paintings outside of the factory space in a grassy lot alongside the waterfront, Z Behl will present
âCamera Obscura: Valley Tableau,â in which visitors will be invited to view the installation through a camera obscura the artist created in the window of the factory space. Z Behl's theatrically inspired installations of freestanding, life-size painted characters enchant and lure viewers into her modern tales.
The props from Andrea Bianconiâs
âPostcard Peopleâ performance, which was staged in downtown Peekskill several times thoughout the fall, will be on view. His video is also part of our final series of PEEKSKILL PROJECT V video works in the HVCCA Video Room, which also includes artists Katrina Bello, Laleh Khorramian, and Camilo Rojas on view at HVCCA through July 28
th.
At 3pm there will be a tour of the outdoor sculptures at Bohlman Park (corner of Main & Hadden St.), including a new work by Kai Vierstra. Other artists who created outdoor works for this space include Charles Harlan, Oliver Jones, Brent Owens, and Marko Remec. Nestor Madalengoitiaâs mural, depicting the City of Peekskill from an aerial view, will be installed on the exterior âPasta Factoryâ at 1698 Main St.
