 From The Artist Tracye Wear:
"Twenty-five years of making functional and sculptural ceramics provided me with a sense of surface and multi-stepped processes that are evident in my encaustic work. I use encaustic because its seductive, lambent quality plays counter to secretive and illusive imagery. Moving from opacity to translucency, the medium conceals revelations."

"In this series, I use images of plants and trees growing outside my studio. Flora dominates the panels, hiding stories and poems and exploring what lies below the surface, what is behind walls, what is out of site hidden in our lives and minds and in our immediate surroundings. You can see a word or phrase here and there, but never the complete story. "

At d. m. allison this June, the artist makes an almost complete transition form her noted ceramic works and the three dimensional pieces found in recent exhibitions, and comes to rest on a platform built upon the encaustic process also known as hot wax painting. This technique involves layering heated beeswax onto wooden panels. Wear makes her encaustic mixture by adding darmar resin and pure pigments to the beeswax and often finishing the work with applications of oil sticks

Metal tools and special brushes are used to shape the wax and work the surface like paint before it cools, while heated metal tools are sometimes used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled. This technique allows Wear to recall just a hint of the 3D aspects found in her earlier ceramic work. The artist also uses tools such as heat lamps, heat guns, and other methods of applying heat to extend the amount of time she has to work with her materials. Some works have elements that are encased or collaged into the surface using the encaustic medium to adhere those elements to the surface.
