SOLO EXHIBITION BY

MAY 11 - JUNE 15, 2013

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present NEWWORLDS, the second solo exhibition at the gallery by renowned contemporary urban artist, Speedy Graphito. This exhibition is presented in partnership with SANDOW, a diverse portfolio of multiplatform brands across consumer and business media, retail and e-commerce, licensing and marketing services. The company and its Chairman and CEO Adam I. Sandow have long supported the contemporary art and design communities and have been helping to introduce Speedy Graphito's work in the United States.

This exhibition for Speedy, at every level, is a turning point in his career. NEWWORLDS will be an immersive experience and his most ambitious show to date, one that reflects his exceptional talent, not only as a painter but as a conceptual artist as well.
- Fabien Castanier
From the LA Weekly:
Thanks to the mainstreaming of street art, it's easy to lose sight of the earlier generation of global pioneers who laid the movement's foundations. Studio City's Fabien Castanier Gallery is aiming to fix that, presenting French urban-art icon Speedy Graphito in his second show with the gallery -- and his first as an official, newly minted American. Despite having three decades of progressive, game-changing art making under his chapeau, Speedy, like so many artists, felt drawn to L.A. and moved mountains to live and work here. To create this show, "NEWWORLDS," he gave himself over to the lines, light, rhythms, pop culture and sugary, polychrome beauty of his adopted hometown, creating all the work in the show from his new L.A. studio. The results include paintings, sculptures and what the gallery calls "an immersive experience" that speaks directly to the evolving language of the global digital media stream we call modern life. Not that the show is unconditionally a fan of the chaos; there is always a level of satire and send-up in Speedy's treatments. But then again, you're not really a true Angeleno until you've first aspired to, then loved, then hated, then finally loved L.A. again. If this fraught, fancy, edgy and accomplished work is any indication, Speedy is home.

Always at the forefront of the cultural landscape, Speedy presents all new work that explores the mutation and perception of the image. In the age of digital over-consumption, myriad channels of communication have transformed the planet into a formidable distribution network, invading the world and our everyday lives on an intimate level. Speedy Graphito explores these concepts through a variety of different mediums, from sculptures and paintings to installations.

This latest exhibition marks Speedy as one of the major figures in urban contemporary art, with an unparalleled global reach that he has built over the past 30 years. Since the early 1980s, he has imposed a powerful and innovative style that has captured the attention of the art world. He hasn’t stopped evolving, always in step with the times by inventing pictorial languages and codes that are iconoclastic and satirical of society. His works are found in private and public collections throughout the world – across Europe, Asia, and now, North America.
