Art News:

05/31/13

Dear readers,

We went to Venice, and we brought back AFC-exclusives!

First things first: Everybody loves Sarah Sze's pavilion. The critical analysis has been, for the most part, absent, so I've tabled a theory

Corinna Kirsch argues that self promotion overpowers Jeremy Deller's show. Nor was I crazy about Shary Boyle at the Canadian Pavilion, but it sorta grew on me. And as readers may have guessed from "How Not To Wait in Line," followed by "What to Read While Waiting in Line"– there was a lot of waiting in line. The rest will come next week.

In the meantime, New Yorkers should make sure to print out our official map and guide to Bushwick Open Studios, which runs this weekend. Our picks are whittled down from over 600 studios, and  includes barbecue and subway stops. Because we love you.

The AFC Guide to Bushwick Open Studios

We always go into open studio events with high hopes, though the experience itself is not always a picnic. You’re going to do some digging to find those gems. To help you get through this, we made you a list of picks based on photos we saw on the Internet. You’re welcome.

Triple Point: Sarah Sze at The United States Pavilion

My theory on Sarah Sze’s installation at the United States Pavilion: The show is both a production-site and graveyard for the relics of an unnamed religion. Members of this cult worship reproduction technology and mass-produced items of any form.

English Magic: Jeremy Deller at the British Pavilion

Jeremy Deller’s video “English Magic” dabbles in extreme self-interest.

Music for Silence: Shary Boyle at The Canadian Pavilion

Two impressions of Shary Boyle’s installation at The Canadian Pavilion. The more positive impression wins out.

Venice Prep: What To Read While Waiting In Line

We’ve braved our fair share of long lines at the Venice Biennale. Waiting’s rarely fun, but it hasn’t been entirely awful thanks to artist Jonas Staal and De Heren van Design’s “Ideological Guide to The Venice Biennale”. We’ve been reading a lot of it.

Venice Prep: How Not To Wait In Line

Did anyone else spend four or more hours queuing in line to see Mike Nelson’s exhibition at the British Pavilion in 2011? Never. Again. Those making their game plan for the Venice Biennale today may want to get into the pavilions likely to have queue lines early. What are those pavilions? We have a list!

Venice Biennale Satellite Event Preview

We’re packing our bags for Venice this week. In preparation, we’ve made our own list of satellite exhibitions we’re looking forward to, because let’s face it, if you’re in Venice, you’ll see everything in the Giardini and the Arsenale.
