"A drunken song breaks out, a tambourine rattles, they whistle to the refrain" is the new exhibition by André Sousa, at Galeria Quadrado Azul, in Lisbon, opening next June 6, 10pm. Despite the festive tone, the sentence that gives the show its title (taken from the book "Crime and Punishment", by Dostoyevsky) refers to a scene in which a tired old mare is about to be stoned to death. Raskolnikov, the main character, soon will awake from the nightmare. Distant in time and place. Landscapes, architecture, Museum objects, public figures, and a nonsense. A ground connecting everything. André Sousa born in Porto, in 1980. Lives and works in Porto. The artist is continuously questioning, through different media â video, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and performance â, not only the ways of creation and reception of the art works, but also the processes of institutionalization of the artist and his work. He gives special attention to the distinct exhibition contexts and devices, as well as to the channels of its disclosure. With a critical view on society, his work is influenced by contexts of counterculture, by antisystemic movements and attitudes, by subcultures. The urban space of the city of Porto is also a central motif, namely the signals of the coexistence of urbanity and rurality, of the idea of urbanity and of a juvenile culture. The notions of collaborative work, collective spirit, sharing, self-organization and management traverse the artistâs practice. Beyond collaborating with other visual artists, street artists, designers, musicians, family members and friends, André Sousa has been, since the beginning of the last decade an active protagonist in the artistic context of Porto, being involved in the creation of independent spaces â PêSSEGOprá SEMANA, MAD WOMAN IN THE ATTIC, Wasser-Bassin and A
