ENCAUSTIC USA

Among contemporary artists during the past dozen years, there has been a surging interest in exploring different uses of wax in their work, creating a virtual encaustic renaissance.  Art work created with encaustic is recognizable by the many and varied effects that can be achieved, depending on the artist's intent:  brilliant color; luminosity; surfaces that show brushstrokes, or are notably smooth or richly textured.

Encaustic USA displays the versatility of wax in the painting, drawing, monoprint, photography, and sculpture of twenty-nine accomplished artists, in styles ranging from abstract (or abstracted) to representational to conceptual.  The work highlighted in this exhibition makes full use of the medium of encaustic, and demonstrates its expressive potential realized through the individual artist's visions.

Juried by Paul Klein and Shelley Gilchrist, these works have been selected to showcase diverse styles of art in which encaustic is used.

Participating artists: Peg Bachenheimer, Donna Zarbin Byrne, Lauren Carter, Helen Dannelly, Judy Edwards, Thomas Frank, Alicia Forestall-Boehm, Mille Guldbeck, Julia Heatherwick, Jeff Hirst, Nikkole Huss, Birgit Huttemann-Holz, Katsy Johnson, Deborah Kapoor, Diane Kleiss, Deborah Landry, Bonny Leibowitz, June Linowitz
Jane Michalski, Joan Fellows Moriarty, Yvonne Prisble, Lynda Ray, Audrey Robertson,, Gwendolyn Terry, Rodney Thompson, Michele Thrane, Karen Tichy, Laura Weiser and Barbara Williams
