Invitation to Lambert Street Absolute                                                                                  June 5, 2013

All in the Family meets Detroit in new theatrical production

Ted Neda as David Alter, Bethany Hedden as Maggie Przybylowicz, and 7even as Deandre WilliamsDetroit, MI – June 3, 2013. Breaking a nine year ticket sales record, Lambert Street sold out every show when it was presented at Planet Ant Theatre in Hamtramck this past January. The show returns in June with the addition of two new acts and a larger cast. Jaclyn Strez returns as director along with most of the original cast including Jessica Care Moore, Kennikki Jones-Jones, Ted Neda, and others. Produced by the employee-owned and operated Detroit Broadcasting Company (DBC), Lambert Street was created as a television sitcom, though it returns to the stage now as a four act play. Is it a new hybrid - television show and stage play? “We will film the pilot episodes in front of a live studio audience during the last weekend of the show”, says director Strez.

According to Aaron Timlin, writer of the first four episodes, Lambert Street was inspired by the politically charged 1970′s TV show “All in the Family” which also started as a stage play. Two years ago Timlin assembled a group of writers to develop the show. Four episodes will be presented as four acts on the stage at the Hastings Street Ballroom opening June 21st, 2013. The story's creators include Timlin and Strez as well as musician and illustrator Annette Walowicz, actress Kennikki Jones-Jones, and actor Derell Edwards Jones.

Through conversations among the various characters, the show reveals the intricate social and economic dynamics of Detroit and the joys and tensions shared among its residents, those who stayed and those who have returned or have moved to the city for the first time. “We hope this show will provide a comedic, yet heartfelt look at Detroit’s future, present and past using the backdrop of an ordinary city street and its residents.” says director Jackie Strez. The show includes DDavid Alter (played by Ted Neda) and his grandmother Eleanor Johnson (played by Kinnikki Jones-Jonesetroit historical figures such as Kenneth Cockrel, Sr., a founding member of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers; Erma Hendersen, the first black woman to serve on Detroit's City Council; and, Leonard Woodcock, former President of the United Auto Workers.

Following select performances, the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit will host panel discussions with former members of the Detroit chapter of the Black Panthers, Detroit City Council, 60's soul and funk musicians, noted civil rights activists, urban farmers and others. The conversations will focus on Detroit's history of music, politics, civil rights, agriculture and the labor movement with an emphasis on the 1960s to the present day.

Tickets are $12. Performances for the play will be Friday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoons June 21 through June 30, 2013, with one Tuesday night performance, June 25, 2013. There will not be a performance on Saturday, June 22. Show times will be 8pm for Friday, Saturday and Tuesday performances and 3pm for Sunday matinees.
