Anne Fenton wins the 2013 Brink Award!

Anne Fenton

Seattle artist Anne Fenton is the recipient of The Brink Award for 2013. The Brink, established with the generous support of longtime Henry benefactors and Seattle philanthropists John and Shari Behnke, is an award for emerging artists age 35 and under in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia “on the brink” of a professional career. Fenton will receive a prize of $12,500 and be given a solo exhibition at the Henry, accompanied by a publication next spring. In addition, a work of art will be acquired for the museum’s permanent collection.

In addition to Fenton, five other artists were chosen as finalists: Rob Halverson and Blair Saxon-Hill from Portland, OR; Raymond Boisjoly and Sylvain Sailly from Vancouver, B.C.; and Nell Warren from Washougal, WA. The jurors conducted studio visits with all of the finalists in late May before selecting the award winner. The jury this year was comprised of Vancouver artist Althea Thauberger; Pacific Northwest College of Art MFA Program Chair and artist Arnold Kemp; and the Henry’s Deputy Director of Art and Education Luis Croquer. The Brink Award complements the Henry’s role as a catalyst for the creation of new work, while simultaneously demonstrating the museum’s commitment to artists working in our region.

Industrial Effects

Industrial Effects: Photographs from the Henry Art Gallery Collection opens June 8

Over the years, photographers have traced the rise and fall of industry’s popularity, from sweeping views of skyscrapers to critical looks at industry’s effect on workers and the environment. Through a selection of photographs from the Henry’s permanent collection, Industrial Effects traces evolving attitudes toward industry from the 19th century until now. Industrial Effects: Photographs from the Henry Art Gallery Collection is organized by Sylvia Wolf, Director. Image: Catherine F. Wagner. Genetically Engineered Tomatoes. 1994. Gelatin silver print. Small Change

Small Change closes June 23
Small Change is a experiment in small, homespun change through tangible activity and face-to-face interaction addressing the themes of reciprocity, barter, debt, and the emergence of markets and related value systems through the creation and distribution of an invented currency. Developed by first-year UW MFA graduate student Rebecca Chernow, the project is the result of an open call to students to develop a project for the Test Site, coinciding with the 2013 MFA graduate exhibition. Family Sundays at the Henry
Reflect and Reshape

Take a close look at the Henry’s exterior walls and you will find a series of paintings made with bicycle and truck reflectors of various sizes and colors. Join us as we explore Richard Elliott’s, Cycle of the Sun and the influences that helped shape his work including geometry, quilting patterns, and basket weaving designs. Then, we’ll make a work on paper inspired by different patterns and your own story! Family Sundays at the Henry are especially designed for adults and children to learn and create together. Each month, inspired by art on view at the Henry, we’ll focus on different activities and new ways of immersing ourselves in the art. Family Sundays are best suited for elementary-aged children, but we encourage older or younger kids to join. Register here.
