W Hotels Designers of the Future Award Winners

The Designers of the Future discuss their studio practices, design ideals and how trips to Verbier, Mexico City and Bangkok inspired new work intended to link international guests to the communities that surround them.


Seung-Yong Song

Seung-Yong Song, a Seoul-based designer, received both his BFA and MFA from the lauded École Supérieure d’Art et de Design in Reims, France. His product and furniture design mixes forms and functions in ways that create new pathways – both in the viewer’s and user’s perception, and in the utility of the objects themselves.


Jon Stam

Jon Stam is a Canadian-Dutch designer who graduated cum-laude from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2008. Stam’s work integrates preindustrial craftsmanship with Internet-era verbiage and privileges quiet interaction over disruption while questioning the relationship between objects and their users.


Bethan Laura Wood

Bethan Laura Wood is a London-based designer with an impressive range – from jewelry, to ceramics, to furniture, to large-scale interventions – who integrates manifold materials and processes. She graduated in 2009 from the Royal College of Art, where she completed an MA in Design Products.


Moderated by Felix Burrichter

Felix Burrichter is a German-born New York-based writer and creative director. He founded PIN–UP in 2006. In addition to consulting on artist’s book projects, Felix is a regular contributor to T The New York Times Style Magazine, Fantastic Man and Wired Italia.

Ginevra Elkann and Patrick Seguin give personal accounts of their passion for Jean Prouvé, and discuss the significance of private museums in today’s cultural landscape.


Ginevra Elkann

Ginevra Elkann is a graduate of the American University in Paris and holds a Masters in Film Making from the London Film School. She is president of the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli, Torino, and currently serves on the European advisory boards of Christie’s and the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Bejing in addition to being a member of the Comité d'acquisition and the Comité Exécutif of the Fondation Cartier in Paris.


Patrick Seguin

Patrick Seguin opened Galerie Patrick Seguin in 1989 in a 300sm gallery space situated in Bastille, Paris. He is a member of the Compagnie Nationale des Experts, and known as one of the most prominent figures in the 20th century design world. He promotes the work of internationally renowned French creators such as Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier, and Jean Royère, and collaborates with prestigious international museums.

Horacio Silva is the Group Editor in Chief of Crane.tv. He has written about design and architecture for The New York Times and PIN-UP, among others. He divides his time between London and New York.

Daniel Arsham and Judith Seng reveal the rich past, present and future of dance and design through a discussion of their collaborations with Merce Cunningham, Jonah Bokaer and Barbara Berti.

 
Judith Seng

Judith Seng investigates contemporary culture and its materialized manifestations. Her works are poetic yet analytical and span the fields of research, experimentation and the creation of objects and spaces. Her projects have been exhibited worldwide in cultural and academic institutions..


Daniel Arsham

Daniel Arsham is a contemporary artist born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1980. He currently lives and works in New York City. His work is included in a range of high-profile collections including the Walker Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami and the LVMH Collection, France. He has collaborated with visionaries such as Merce Cunningham, Jonah Bokaer, and Hedi Slimane.

 
Moderated by Tamar Shafrir

Tamar Shafrir trained in architecture and design and now works on editorial projects, debates, lectures, and exhibitions examining the intersection of these two disciplines within larger social phenomena. Based in Genoa, she writes for Domus magazine and was the catalogue editor for the first Istanbul Design Biennial.
