Guidelines
for investing in SA art
JOHANNESBURG
- There is no formula for how one can successfully invest
in art, but there are guidelines and precautions one can
take to minimise the risk. The Mei Moses World Art Index,
which looks at the resale values of painting, has over
the last fifty years outperformed US and international
equity markets. Locally, over the last eight years, the
Citadel Index (see graph below) has outperformed the All
Bond Index, SA Cash and for the last seven years, residential
property (although it's on par currently). The 2013 Citadel

Sunday 16 June 2013 at 11h00 am The Gallery at Grande Provence proudly
presents the opening of the exhibitions Tom Waits for No Man
in The Gallery and 1969 in The Project Room.
Tom Waits
for No Man was arranged by Gordon Froud and is based on the success
of his 2012 Leonard Cohen Altarpiece exhibition Altered
Pieces - that was shown during June/July and the Bastille Festivities
in 2012 at Grande Provence.
This year in the same timeslot, Gordon Froud extends his curative activities
in the direction of cultural innovator and master songwriter, Tom Waits.
The Tom Waits for No Man exhibition incorporates the contributions
of more than 100 acclaimed South African artists. The artworks are based
on an LP sized circular format (app. 30cm. in diameter). No restrictions
were placed on approach or materials and artists were free to use lyrics
of their choice for inspiration.
The Project Room will feature a solo exhibition by Cape Town artist
David Brits titled 1969. The shows title marks the
year that Brits grandfather led a rescue mission to the most remotely
inhabited place in the world, Gough Island - in the South Atlantic Ocean,
where South Africa has maintained a weather station since 1956.
In an era of state-controlled media, over the weeks that the mission
unfolded it was a highly publicized event, and for that short time the
Rescue to Gough Island in many ways managed to capture South
Africas collective imagination.
A collection of drawings based on a small family archive of personal
photographs and newspaper clippings relating to that time, 1969
offers us both a window into an unusual event from the past as well
as a glimpse into the life of Brits grandfather, a man he hardly
knew.
A Preview Dinner will take place on Saturday evening 15 June 2013 at
18h30 for 19h00 in The Gallery with the artists Gordon Froud, Diane
Victor and David Brits in attendance. For reservations contact Barbara
at reservations@grandeprovence.co.za or +27 (0)21 876 8600.
For further information or a preview please contact Carina at gallery@grandeprovence.co.za
or +27 (0)21 876 8630 to make an appointment. The Gallery is open from
Monday to Sunday, from 10h00 until 17h00.
