La Bienal 2013, El Museo's 7th biennial exhibition, features work by 37 artists, from newly-minted to mid-career, who live and work in New York City metropolitan area. La Bienal explores, offers, and supports experimental and experiential aspects of contemporary art. It offers an opportunity for artists and viewers to connect through the art object and the ideas behind it.
The exhibition was designed to provide a platform for artists who have never shown at El Museo. La Bienal is interested in the conditions under which works of art are made and how they are received by the public.

Las Galerías
Presencia,the most recent exhibition of work from El Museo's permanent collection, focuses on ideas of presence and its antithesis, absence. This theme is explored through photography, painting, prints, drawings, masks, and other objects. The exhibition investigates the visibility and invisibility of the human form through the presentation of the body in literal and conceptual ways. Featured artists include Luis Mendez, Shaun El C. Leonardo, Oscar Muñoz, Benvenuto Chavajay, Christian Cravo, Roberto Juárez, Fernando Salicrup, and Rafael Tufiño.

Launching a long-term collaboration with New York's El Museo del Barrio-the leading Latino cultural institution in the U.S. dedicated to Latino, Latin American, and Caribbean art-the Nevada Museum of Art presents a wide-ranging and diverse survey of their stellar art collection. This lively exhibition presents over fifty objects including sculpture, painting, prints, photographs, and mixed media installations addressing themes such as identity politics, colonialism, emotional connections to homeland, and contemporary visual culture. Artworks created by living artists are contextualized with a concise selection of ancient Taίno stone carvings. Voces y Visiones: Highlights from the Collection of El Museo del Barrio, New York, was jointly organized by the El Museo del Barrio and the Nevada Museum of Art.

Every Wednesday this summer El Museo is staying up late with our resident DJ 5ifty5ive and Les Carbonell. Start the night off with gallery talks by artists in El Museo's 7th biennial exhibition La Bienal: HERE IS WHERE WE JUMP and stay for free gallery admission, music, dance, and performances.
Watch the sun set over Central Park from El Café's courtyard and dance to 5ifty5ive's mix of soul, afro beat, and house.

In his newest work, choreographer Antonio Ramos is inspired by the stories of homeless LGBT youth, in addition to his own journey growing up as a queer Puerto Rican. He brings his celebratory and joyous energy to often dark and difficult subject matter: the search for family, shelter, safe space, and one's true identity.
This performance includes nudity and may not be suitable for all audiences.

Around the Block from El Museo Walking Tours

Join us for a walking tour of the neighborhood around El Museo. We'll explore El Barrio's vibrant public art, beautiful community gardens, rich cultural organizations, and diverse store fronts that have shaped East Harlem into the unique neighborhood it is today. The tour begins with El Museo del Barrio and its history and will continue on to include the Modesto Flores Community Garden, the Spirit of East Harlem mural, Justo Botanica, Graffiti Hall of Fame, and much more.
Tickets available for $15 online or at El Museo del Barrio. Space is limited; pre-purchase recommended. Tours meet in the lobby at El Museo del Barrio and leave promptly at 11:30am.
PLEASE NOTE: In the event of inclement weather, a guided tour of our galleries will be offered in lieu of the Around the Block from El Museo tour.

Since 1998 more than 2000 dead bodies and skeletal remains of illegal border crossers have been found in the desert in southern Arizona. The Undocumented tells the story of Marcos Hernandez, an undocumented Mexican living and working in Chicago. Marcos came to the United States, crossing through the Sonora Desert in southern Arizona. Each month he sends money to his mother in Mexico City for medicine for his brother Gustavo who is in need of a kidney transplant. But Marcos had an even more pressing reason for coming to the United States. He came to search for his father, Francisco, who disappeared in the Sonora Desert trying to enter the United States.

The Hudson Valley Singers, a community based professional and non-professional chorus, is happy to present "Hymn of Love" with music of Weber, Schumann, and Nielsen, conducted by Eugene Sirotkine. Joining them will be the Masters School Middle School Children's Chorus and the New York Metamorphoses Orchestra. A number of acclaimed soloists will be performing, including: Eleni Calenos, Soprano, Liana Brooke, Soprano, Alexandra Lushtak, Mezzo-Soprano, David Guzman, Tenor, Robert Garner, Baritone, and Emmanuel Mendes-Chumaceiro, Bass.
