Cam WONG

an isolated chapter

5 July - 3 August 2013

Opening: Friday, 5 July, 6 - 8 pm

Gallery EXIT, 3/F, 25 Hing Wo Street, Tin Wan, Aberdeen, Hong Kong

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 1100 - 1800

Four sets of print works offer Cam Wong's detailed observations on life. Her etchings, composed of simple geometric shapes, document the passing of time. "An isolated chapter", from which the exhibition takes its name, is a 3 by 3 metre installation of 425 seemingly identical prints made from a single copper plate. Through an arduous routine of inking, pressing and buffing, the pattern on paper fades with every impression as the sunken lines on metal gradually meld into a smooth plane.

This earnest approach is in part a form of self-training for the artist as the repetitiveness sets pace for meditation. With the imminence of disappearance, the changing state in the prints attests to the subtle differences of events in time, and brings about a paradoxical awareness of being. The consciousness of such echoes Wong's romanticised vision of the transient nature of life. The resulting constellation is both a sequence of experience and a poetic display of timelessness. Her works create alternative spaces, allowing viewers to stop and ponder.

Cam Wong graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2006 and is the recipient of the Kyoto Mayor Award, Tsuzurakai Exhibition, Japan (2010). Her works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, Taiwan with a solo exhibition "Incomplete Moments" at the Chinese Cultural Centre, Sydney (2010). She is currently an artist-in-residence at Groundwork Architecture + Urbanism Studio, Hong Kong.

2013, oil on aluminium, 115 x 87 x 2.6 cm

CRT -> CYM

5 July - 3 August 2013

Opening: Saturday 5 July, 6 - 8 pm

Gallery EXIT, 3/F, 25 Hing Wo Street, Tin Wan, Aberdeen, Hong Kong

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 1100 - 1800

A departure from his phantasmal screenprints based on satellite mapping, KONG Yiu Wing's new colour-field paintings on aluminium are a move towards abstraction.

In the digital age, information is increasingly transient and image consumption becomes instant and passive. Whilst "CRT" in the title denotes cathode ray tube in colour monitors and "CYM" refers to cyan, yellow and magenta in digital printing, Kong positions himself as the intermediate mechanism in a perfunctory system of image processing.

The artist continues to comment on the contemporary way of seeing by employing the minimal components of silkscreen printing. With every blade stroke, a combination of primary-coloured oil paint is squeezed through a stencil-less mesh and is transferred onto the cool surface of an aluminium board. The method of painting is fast and indirect, and the action of the artist resonates a robotic rhythm. However much of the resulting image is left to chance and the unrefined surface retains traces of an human element.

KONG Yiu Wing graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2011. In the same year, he received the New Trend Award, Cheung's Fine Arts Award in Western Painting, Grotto Fine Art Award and Y.S. Hui Fine Arts Award. Kong has participated in "ArtLive@Park" Sha Tin Park, Hong Kong (2011), "Lui Chun Kwong: You are here, I am not" Osage Kwun Tong (2010), "FENG YU PIAO YAO AI GUO SHI" Artist Commune, Cattle Depot Artist Village, Hong Kong. His solo exhibitions include "Recursive Place" Grotto Fine Arts (2012) and "foot.note", Artist Commune (2011).

《CRT -> CYM》
