Traylor in Motion: Wonders from New York Collections
JULY AT THE AMERICAN FOLK ART MUSEUM

now through September 22, 2013

Two exhibitions now on view at the American Folk Art Museum include more than 100 drawings and paintings by self-taught Alabama artist Bill Traylor (c. 1954-1949). Traylor was born into slavery; years after emancipation, near the end of his life, he created iconic works of art, characterized by flat, simply defined shapes and vibrant compositions. In this visual autobiography, Traylor recorded events from his past as well as observations of his later life in Montgomery.

Exhibition catalog available.

All three exhibitions are sponsored in part by Joyce Berger Cowin, public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, the Ford Foundation, the David Davies and Jack Weeden Fund for Exhibitions, the Robert Lehman Foundation, and Laura and Richard Parsons. Lectures and symposia are supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Bill Traylor Dog Tote Bag

Bill Traylor Dog Tote Bag

This extraordinarily strong shopping bag, made of TYVEK, has been designed to accompany the Bill Traylor exhibitions at the museum. The dog motif, in white, is reproduced against a manila-colored background that suggests the cardboard support often used by the artist. The bag measures 21 1/2 x 15 inches, has sturdy black handles and straps, and can be folded up neatly when not in use. $14; $12.60 for members.
