Life Painting Summer School

Monday 05 to Friday 09 August
Times: 10am-4pm (1 hour for lunch: 1-2pm)
Price: £200 (all materials included)
Tutor: Edward Wills

Tuition on the course is individual, therefore can be adapted to each students' needs.

Rough course outline:

DAY 1

A structured approach to drawing the human form, starting with the raw mechanics and applying a system of measurement to acquire a solid and accurate means to establish proportions and develop a drawing with key essentials in mind. This method provides a strong basis and is quickly acquired and enables beginners with a ready means to achieve and the more accomplished with a "check" on their existing working practise.

DAY 2
A transitional day from drawing to painting. Starting with a pencil study to consolidate the previous day's work and then taking the "linearity" of the pencil into areas of blocking (mosaics) and subsequent observations of plane changes and relating this to shadow masses. A monochrome (white, transparent raw sienna and raw umber) figure study is a useful means to establish the relationship of lights (opaque) and shadows (transparent) and the craft aspect of "unfolding" a painting in a reduced form, setting things up for day 3.

DAY 3
The structure of the palette and its logic (warm and cold colours, opaque and transparent paint, pigment siblings, etc). Then into a "wash study" (raw sienna and raw umber over a light wash base) and then into mid-tone blocking and the sequence of letting a painting develop and the means of colour mixing and keeping your palette surface workable and vibrant.

DAY 4
Building upon the previous day and introducing refinement, corrections and techniques such as "knifing down" with the palette knife, Etc whilst still keeping a keen eye on all the previous day's areas of study. Strong emphasis on drawing all the elements together to reach a confident stage and methods to keep "checking" one's work.

DAY 5
The final stages of the process - continued drawing together and final "flourishes"; a few professional tricks and completing techniques and adjustments of warm/ cold aspects and painting "wet into wet".
