Diabolo Bossou by Petit Frère Mogirus,
sequins and beads sewn on satin
Haiti is a Caribbean island of paradox, attempting to establish a peaceful democracy amid threats of dictatorship. Its people possess a surprising wellspring of artistic creativity despite ongoing political unrest, poverty and illiteracy. The creativity of the Haitian people is inspired by belief in a pantheon of gods. Their artistry is most strikingly manifested in Vodou flags with their colorful sequined and beaded religious imagery.
Discover more about these "dazzling flags" Friday, July 26 at 5 p.m. from Guest Curator Candice Russell, collector and author of Masterpieces of Haitian Art published by Schiffer Books.
Candice Russell is an independent museum curator of Haitian art exhibitions, an enthusiastic art collector and a veteran South Florida journalist. She has been to Haiti many times, documenting her experiences with artists and attending Vodou ceremonies. Russell is the author of the book Masterpieces of Haitian Art, a comprehensive, full-color examination of the best Vodou flags, paintings, metal sculptures, papier-mâché constructions and mixed media assemblages to be produced in 70 years.
