THIS WEEKEND
Fine Craft Fair in Wilmington
Made in America Matters
coming up > July 27 & 28, 2013
Wilmington: The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen celebrates its 7th anniversary as the Brandywine Valley’s largest premier fine craft fair. The event, held at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, features the work of more than 190 independent craftsmen with a passion for impeccable technique, unique vision, and thoughtful design.
Craft patrons and collectors from around the region converge annually on Wilmington to celebrate authentic handmade style. “Whether it’s items for your home or gifts for your loved ones,” said Sherrie Boyer, executive director. “Buying something handmade means you can buy something unusual, something that expresses your individual style, something that has a story behind it. It was created with care, one at a time.”
Three artists from the show’s postcard exhibit the unique vision evident in handmade products. Sheila Fernekes’ beaded jewelry (right) features loops and knots of beads in deep jungle colors. Her background as a graphic designer and illustrator is evident in the lush colors and striking lines of each one-of-a-kind piece. Emily Squires Levine elevates polymer clay into electrifying vessels, tiles, and eggs. They are bright, covered in geometric patterns, and look as delicate as stained glass, although her tiles are hardy enough to withstand the rigors of kitchen life. Linda Doucette’s fiber art stems from her own Shady Grove Farm, where her 10 alpaca, 5 angora rabbits, and locally raised sheep provide the fibers, her garden provides the natural dyes, and she provides the inspiration. She needle felts wool into cozy animals, weaves, and spins and dyes yarn.
The thousands of special works available for purchase over the weekend range from furniture to one-of-a-kind clothing, photography, pottery, weaving, jewelry, sculpture, woodturning, and more.
With this event, the Guild continues to unite an astute audience with exceptional handmade objects. The Fine Craft Fair is open Saturday from 10 am – 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am – 5 pm. Admission is $8, children under 12 are free. Free parking is plentiful.
